well, i'm excited to say that the indiana state fair started today and i was there ASAP after work. i don't care about the pigs and the marching bands and the tractors (well, ok, some of the old tractors are really cool) -- for most of us urban dwellers, the fair is all about the food.

this year the starring attraction is the introduction of the deep-fried twinkie (i don't make this stuff up). due to an overwhelming fascination with edibles served on sticks, i of course had to try it.

anyone who wants a mini-photo tour of this year's fair food (heavily featuring the deep-fried twinkies) is welcome to check it out here.

enjoy!

rob

*edit* I, of course, didn't mean to type "deep-friend" in the subject of my post. my fingers must have slipped 'cause of the twinkie grease.

I grew up in Pendleton, just a little ways up I69. All I remember from the fairs back then were Elephant Ears! Can you still get one of those? ...with honey and powdered sugar???

Yeah, the Minnesota State Fair has all manner of weird fried things on sticks...candy bars, cheese curds, pickles...I think I'll stick with cotton candy and funnel cakes.

really, the deep-fried twinkie was much like a twinkie wrapped in an elephant ear. all the fried stuff tastes the same to me, really -- it's the toppings that are the difference. but, yes, the twinkie was good.

and i'm goin' back tomorrow! time to get the fat pants out!

I actually know Pendleton well. I went to Anderson Highland (my mom still lives up there). What year(s) did you guys graduate? I was '92 but I knew some PHS people.

I don't think they did away with live animals, but there is something going on. I guess instead of wild animals in cages they are doing some kind of natural habitat thing. I don't know. Last night was the food and the photo exhibits. I'm going again on Saturday -- a friend of mine has told me that they've set up some kind of "Goat Mountain" (??? wtf??) so we have to check that out. I'll report back later.

I come from a land that'll deep fry anything that stops moving long enough.

Deep fried mars bars are okay, but I prefer deep fried bounty bars.

Deep fried pizza is also popular.

last year the deep-fried snickers were quite disappointing. that's why the twinkies are so popular -- they hold up under the pressure of the frying process.

gordon -- are you referring to scotland or texas for its deep-frying prowess? LOL

I didn't know haggis was deep-fried!
I know some Okies who deep-fry okra--that's pretty good that way. And if you call it tempura it could be anything ....

Well the goold ole Illinois State fair kicks off in about 2 hours here for a 10 day run...

Can't wait to get the gator on a stick, or hit the Ethnic Village for some good Jamiacan jerked chicken, and of course the Italian sausages with peppers & onions, Tom Thumb donuts, lamb burgers, think fatty ribeyes, lemon shakeups...and of course frosty cold Budweisers

I love deep fried haggis. One of the main things I miss from home. It isn't always deep fried, but it certainly gets served that way quite often in chip shops.

I have to admit to knowing about haggis but never having tried it. Fried actually makes it sound more appetizing than previous descriptions I've heard. I like knowing about what people eat in different parts of the world, besides the typical restaurant fare.

And people make fun of synchronized swimmers.

I hope everone remembers to detach the disc harrow so as to avoid turning it into a demolition derby or Ben Hur-type chariot race ....

Those are great! Those state fair photos are a great chunk of Americana (I stress the word chunk). Makes me want to go back home for a visit in the summer time. I don't think the deep fried twinkies got to Michigan by the time I moved here-- but they must be there by now.

I really like the Fudge and the Corndog photo. Those feel like a LIFE magazine story on the midwest.

ELEPHANT EARS! I saw a sign in the background, and now I have to have one. These crazy aussies have never heard of them-- they are too busy making pies out of meat!
