It is an indication of the degree of esteem in which the collected voters are held by the typical photographer.
When you buy into the idea that the icon really represents an objective indication that one's photo was "the best" of all the submissions, it becomes an addictive ambrosia with which to feed the ego. |

I don't understand why no one understands. It's a contest. We compete to see who has the highest-voted shot, yes? Then there's value to being voted the best, yes?
I'm not going to argue that the ribbon winners are the best photos by some objective test, because no such test exists. But it does mean that you got the highest average vote.
Why do you think people compete for any awards? Money isn't the only thing worth trying for. You think the people who win ribbons at county fairs do it for money? Or local photography club contests?
There are definitely people who enter for other reasons, but I gotta tell ya: a high score is exciting, and a ribbon is something I seriously doubted I'd ever receive. I enter plenty of shots that have no chance of winning, but a nice score is still a nice score.
Now, as to the crazy conspiracies, I agree with earlier posters that some people having trouble accepting others voting lower than they expect. And then you have to toss in the few bad apples who really have cheated, and who serve as the rare exception that everyone remembers over the tens of thousands of valid entries and thousands of honest folks.

it's human nature (eta: for SOME) to cheat and to suspect others of cheating.
that and I read once where someone suggested the front page was sometimes watched by people looking for photographers or art work and having your picture on the front page could possibly get you the exposure (not that type of exposure Leroy ;) ) to help you get out there and known...not sure if that is true but I guess anything is possible.
Plus isn't it true that the front page images get more views and comments and he who dies with the most comments wins over all? :)

for some, i think it is easier to believe that trolls and cheaters exist than to admit that their shot isn't all that great.

Some people just can't believe that there is someone that is better, bigger, faster, stronger, smarter, etc. than they are. I, on the other hand, came to grips with this a long time ago...
So when I finally meet someone like this, I won't be surprised.
;D

Virtual candy are excellent, zero calorie prizes, maybe chocolate ribbons.
I once faxed the girl scouts some dollar bills for cookies, they emailed me saying my cookies were sent to my browser. I was virtually unfulfilled. |

I don't see why it's being labeled paranoia.
We know people cheat. It's fact.
We know people score idiotically for unsound reasons. It's fact.
It's not *widespread*, but it happens.
My counter-question, as usual, is "why worry?"
SC does a great job weeding out the occasional cheater, and strange and unusual voting patterns. If "it's just a bunch of pixels" why bother worrying about what other people are worrying about? Winning those pixels means winning a spot in the limelight for a little while. That's big news for people. It's a real rush. It's a real boost. It's human nature to want to feel appreciated, popular, important, whatever.
Yah.. it's just a bunch of pixels. But it's what those pixels *represent*. They're a symbol. Symbolism is a big deal for humans.
So we'll get people that will do whatever it takes to get there once in awhile.. we'll get people that, even if the intentions are pure, will do what they can to be in that limelight. SC usually gets them in the end, and DPC goes on. DPC always goes on. |

oh no virtual chocolate ribbons! Not a good idea. I for one have those days when I can't get enough chocolate...yes I'm a man and no I'm not PMS'ing ;)... and can just see my coworker coming in and I'm licking the computer monitor. :) |

| Agreed, it really amazes me on how so many are so negative and not in a constructive way. AND it also amazes me at how so many people here have so little life that they think they own this site and really have a say on what happens here. Dang .... AND why in the heck do I check in here a dozen times a day .... addictive aint't it ;) |

I think that it is pretty obvious. People are competitive – both in terms of a base desire to win (why else enter?) and to win kudos. Ribbons signify a win and confer kudos within this community. Also, there are more tangible side benefits of getting a ribbon – front page exposure.
People complain about voting because they suffer a misconception about the nature of public voting. The whole point of the competition is to create an image that encourages voters to vote high (bearing in mind all the circumstances). There is no other measure of quality or success for the purposes of DPC competition. Contrary to some people’s expectations, voters never make mistakes – success or failure in attracting votes is entirely down to the photographer.
If the complainers understood the nature of scoring and their total responsibility for their own scores, they would probably complain less - they are, after all, only highlighting their own deficiencies...
