I would like to get some feedback on this idea... This is my first attempt at this result, and I wasn't properly prepared to shoot it. It's a hand-held sequence of images and I really need to shoot it with a tripod.

So what is your process? Burst and layers or can it be done with an apparatus that repeatedly covers and uncovers the lens while taking a longer exposure? Very cool by the way!

I shot a burst of 6 or 7 photos. I stacked them in photoshop with the first shot on the bottom and the last shot on top. I wanted the final shot in the sequence to be the dominant photo. I erased around the ball and the ball player on the top layer and then adjusted the opacities of the underlying layers to get the effect...

I guess the challenge would be to isolate the subject from the background with some foreground lighting and spot metering or an array of flash bursts. Tough to get in an uncontrolled environment would be my guess. I'll have to try that with my bird photos some time. Thanks for the idea!

cool idea! Gives a nice feel for the action involved. I might like to see a bit more of the ghosted shots, but it's quite effective as is.

Looks ok, but I'd like to see it when you shoot with the tripod and with the layers just a little less transparent. I also think this might be a much more compelling shot taken "side-to" the pitcher.

I don't think you need all the layers -- the ones with the hat up high don't add anything IMO. I think you could get by with just three layers -- the ones which you already have as most dominant. You might then also be able to make them a bit more opaque.

I definitely think you're on the right track with this technique, and I like this particular picture well enough that it seems worth trying to fine-tune it.

I've seen that view before, showing the entire sweep of the arm.

With this front view, it would also be interesting if it tracked the flight of the ball for 2-3 frames.

I did some experimentation with less opaque layers, but I didn't like the results as much. That seems to make the foreground image less isolated. I'm going to try this again with a tripod and I'll try it from some other angles.

I can't use a flash. That's strictly against the rules.
