It seems that the "Rumors" about an 18.7 mega pixel Nikon with a 1.1 sensor seem to be known to the people at Pentax. When I brought up the new Nikon they weren't at all surprised and said "Yes, a 1.1 sensor of 18.7 mega pixels..."
Take it for what ever that is worth. The implications could be interesting.

Unless it comes with a 1000 (or lower) Euro price tag, it's of no interest (not even academic interest) to me. |

Let's hope so. It'd give me a very good reason to buy Zeiss glass =)

The important question is whether or not Pentax is going to release that dope 50th anniversary edition DSLR. |

No chance of that. Depending on what level they build it at, it will either be competing with Canon's 1Ds mkII ($7k USD) or the 5D ($2.5k USD). My guess is that it will be aimed at the 1-series, and carry a relatively hefty price tag. |

I agree with Kirbic. Don't expect this rig to be released at anything under 5K.

I would agree that it will be above 2K but I would think it would be around 3K to compete with the 5d. the 5d has gotten alot of good press since his release and the d200 is great but didn't give the full (or 1.1 in this case) frame. |

No doubt about that. I only meant to say that since under normal circumstances I'll never own one, it doesn't make any difference to me whether it exists or not. |

Why the 1.1 frame vs. full frame? What's the difference? (In a nutshell for this layman, please). :-)
And yes, the 5D sounds very appealing. Why non a comparable Nikon version? |

A 1.1 crop would be nice if Pentax could pull it off, but their current (and planned) lens line isnt really full frame friendly. A 12-15mp 1.3 crop is much more likely, IMO...
As for Nikon... the 1.1 makes alot of sense. As usual, the next few months will be rather interesting...

I expect a pricetag at D2x level. One of the advantages of using 1.1x crop is more efficiency on the wafers -> you get more sensors from a wafer than ff. Gives you a costprice advantage. Something Nikon needs because Canon cost advantage comes from the volume they produce.
Also, as far as I heard from the rumors, Nikon is buying their sensor from the market and do not make it inhouse. This could possibly force the price of the sensor down because of competition between the other parties.
I wonder what they will end up with. Sony seems out, Foveon some say, strong hints to Kodak. Smartest thing would be just to buy Canon sensors. :)

What? Do I see this correctly? Use - splutter - Canon sensors? Are you mad, man?
Chuckle. Given that Nikon do not produce their own there is a hint of logic in this. Personally, I would really be pleased if they used the Foveon and added the Nikon touch to it. A 1.1 ff would then make me think about upgrading - plus 2 years after launch when the prices come down in real terms. |

Looks like it will be a Sony.
Cnet Article
I'd guess that the 1.1x crop factor is there to leave some room in the lightbox for the inbody stabilization which the Sony DSLR's use.

I hope I can afford it. At the 5D price point, I'd do it but at the D2X, 1D Mark III price I'll have to sit it out.
It will be strange losing all that zoom range. Hmmmm. |

I hope that it triggers a price reduction down the entire line. I could see getting a second body if the prices come down some more.
