yep, that's the one, thanks! And apologies to all for this rant but I really thought PWL would break 6. I think people will agree with me, TSers and otherwise. I will turn off scores in future before voting starts to avoid disappointment.

Deb,
I wasn't kidding. I love context, too, but this isn't about my taste. Here are the rulesets I want to have:
Mainstream - I will let Bear Music define the rules for this category. Allow anything that Ansel Adams did to a photograph, anything that is part of the mainstream photographic tradition. I'm quite sure Ansel wasn't averse to burning out "major elements" or "changing the typical viewer's description of the photograph."
Photojournalist - I would let Skip define this one. Allow anything a newspaper editor would allow his photographers to do.
Art - Anything that a gallery owner would allow, i.e., as long as the work is original to the photographer and wouldn't run into copyright or licensing problems. Let the voters decide if it's "photographic" enough.
I'm not going to bother suggesting these out there in the "real" non-suck world, however. I've gotten enough flak already just for suggesting one rule change. |

Thank you, Don, for at least trying.
There seems to be limited mechanisms for rule change suggestions and discussions without being "burned at the stake" as a heretic. |

Don, I would venture that we already have two of those rulesets here - Expert = Mainstream, and Minimal = Photojournalism.
I already tire of seeing shot after shot of an item floating in a perfectly homogenous background of black or white... but that's just me, and hell I've done it, too.
Edit to add that those shots do well here and that type of photography is not to be condemned by any means. It's just not necessarily my thing. Seems I've been pissing off people all day with my opinions. :-)

Susan, please don't let it get you down (However, I know how frustrating it is to "almost be there"). PWL is a low-scoring challenge in general from what I've read on threads, etc. Thus, even if you don't quite get that 6, you may do well percentile wise. Looking forward to seeing the photo!
Lea - please keep us posted on Bear's surgery and your hemoglobin level. Sending lots of positive energy and warm wishes your way!
Don - please enter something truly inspired for backside. No pressure, but it is your kind of challenge. Like, totally, man. |

Susan, I really empathize with your angst as I go through it all too often myself.
If you've not done so already, I highly recommend the side challenges/projects as they concentrate more on developing your own unique skills and tastes rather than pandering to the almighty scores.
I was having a rough spot a week or so ago, and was ready to toss in the towel (again) 'til I got hooked up in the Ordinary Things project, where I not only reclaimed some confidence and enthusiasm, but I had a shot selected as a fav,and discovered that there's something I seem to really have an eye for that I hadn't realized before. (Although it seems weird even to me that I have a *thing for old windows!)
Give it a try.....you'll find the support and camaraderie similar to what you get here.....almost!......8>)

I had a great time in the "30 days where you live" side challenge, even though I fell behind toward the end. Once things settle down for me in the next few weeks, I might do one of those again before doing a bunch of challenges.

I agree with Jeb. I've found great support in the side challenges. And so do some of DPC's really fantastic photographers (IMO) such as Sandy P. So far I've thrilled with being able to PLAY to my heart's content in 30 days of "Where You Live", "Black and White", and now "Ordinary Objects".

Hmm, I always figured I didn't really have the time for the 30 day challenges. But they do sound kinda fun :)
And I spend so much time taking photos anyway, I guess I might as well try one at some point... |

You could do "30 days of teaching lemurs how to play with fire"!

:D oh my god, that is so happening!
Actually, the most recent lemur plan was, well... It turns out I'll also be connected to a charity working with baobab trees while I'm there. And those things are big and crazy, and apparently you can hollow them out and use the space without harming them. So the plan was to open up a bar in one of those, teach lemurs how to juggle bottles and pour cocktails and have them employed as cute fluffy bar staff, and a fire-spinning friend of mine wanted to live in one of the spare branches, so he could a) pose for shots, and b) teach the lemurs how to fire spin while he's at it.
Flawless. Hmm, I wonder you you connect up Broadband to a baobab? |

You're all welcome to join the ongoing "ordinary objects" side challenge that's currently underway. Start anytime you want, stop anytime you want :) It's here:

It's a good thing I am having fun in the 30 Day Ordinary Challenge, because it is not so fun looking at my score!

On my way to a personal low! It has been going down steadily since yesterday. (I didn't expect much in the first place--thank goodness.) I just entered Transitions, since I would hate to not see a 4.xxx when I log in! |

I think that's one thing that should be mentioned.....the side projects(I don't like to call them challenges-they are only challenging to YOU to take better pictures how YOU see the world) are a way to get feedback with no pressure, a way to experiment and see what others think, and most importantly, a way to find out about yourself andf your style.
What I found during the "Where I live" project, was that I could show people *MY* world, and lo and behold, they liked it from my perspective because they got a chance to see something they'd never seen before through the eyes of a kindred spirit.
And with the theme, you merely add your style and perspective to what you're shooting, and guess what......you get even better at your own style because you're developing it at the same time that you're utilizing it to its fullest potential.
'Cause that's what we do, really......f*ck the challenges.....what the TS member really does best is to be an artist and a storyteller all wrapped up in one.
I learned that her, discovered it to be true in the Where I Live project, and am seeing it again in Ordinary Things.
So....
What say you all.....each month someone has a theme for the TS project?
And don't confine it to a 30 day thing.....just have it as "The TS Theme of the Month".....join whenever, participate as you lioke, and have the only caveats be that it's all current, i.e. that the shots you share be recent and with effort expended for the theme.
Anyway.....just some random musings.....

I think this is a great idea! We could start a Team Suck Adventure thread each month with a new theme, and people can post their images there so they don't get lost in the noise in this thread.

I don't think we could restrict it even if we wanted to. People will see all the fun we're having and naturally want to join in. It's still early enough to have a theme for June..any suggestions?

How about Don goes back and pulls all the random photo suggestions he's posted (ya know, like for Color Portrait: shoot the color of a parent's direction to a child as it flies in one ear and out the other) and we use those as the themes?

I could go for a June theme, however, I have only submitted one entry into the ordinary objects side challenge. So, count me in for one picture. More if you do something like "flowers" for a theme :-) |
