I'm shooting my first wedding this weekend, and I'm curious to know if anyone had any pointers?

Thanks,
Jen

You are welcome to look at the wedding shots I took at my nieces wedding last month.

Just be yourself and dont be afraid of telling people what you want from them, as in, loo this way, turn your head, hands in front, etc.. Have fun and eat lots of cake!!!

I know that photographers are not held in the highest esteem at times, but surely, this is going too far?

It's not going too far. People hire photographers to help them look their best on their big day. They're so lost in the excitement they don't know where to look!

Don't hang out after you are done taking the pics and don't let ANYONE besides you touch the camera. Uncle Joe will say, Hey that's pretty nifty. Mind if I take a look at that new-fangled camera?" Don't let him. Go upload the goods and save a couple of copies. Ruining a wedding is the worst thing imaginable.

Take some back-up equipment if possible, extra batteries, etc, or even someone else to take pictures with you at a different angle.

Focus and expose for the Bride. Always make the Bride look good. Go early or the day before to find areas that would make good backgrounds.

Take some 'before' pictures of the bride in her gown. This can be done before the wedding or even a day or two before the wedding in a park or somewhere else that has a good backdrop. You can take a lot of pictures of the bride in different poses with different backgrounds in parks or gardens, depending on where you live and the weather. If you have portable lighting, take some mood pictures of the bride with the veil over her face, close-ups, different poses possibly with props.

Take some 'before' pictures of the bride and the bride's maids, on a stairway, on a platform, on the pulpit, or in an outdoor place.

Take some of the participants as they walk down the aisle.

Take some of the ceremony as the bride and groom or others light candles, as they say the vows, when they kiss, when they turn around, and as the participants walk up the aisle out of the Church.

Then, after pre-arranging this, take group pictures of the bride and groom, bride with her family, groom with his family, grand parents, the mothers together, the bride's maids, the groomsmen, the bride's maids and the groomsmen and flower girl and ring bearer, the bride's maids and groomsmen with the bride and groom, the bride with her dad, etc.

Then at the reception, take some of the bride and groom behind the cake, cutting the cake, feeding the cake, the groom's cake, the toast, and some of the bride and groom kissing, the taking off and throwing the garter and bouquet, some of those catching the garter and bouquet.

Take lots of pictures of the people at the reception, family members, kids, grand parents, aunts and uncles.

Take some of the bride and groom's car. Some of the bride and groom leaving, the rice throwing or bubble blowing.

I would like to chime in:) My daughter is getting married saturday and I must say you folks have been a great help given the fact I plan to do most of the photography. I have watched the pros and have done alot of work for young couples and there children but this has got to be the most pressure I have felt in terms of taking pictures... so with that, again thanks to this forum and all of you that help the rest of us get it right:)

Great job on the photo. Looks like you have an eye for the perfect shots. Good luck in the future.

it was a lot of fun considering that the bride and groom have been friends of mine for a very long time.

the only problem that i had was that the video guy was in a few of my shots, rendering them unusable... that's something i'm trying to fix currently in photoshop.

Agree, beautiful shots, looks totally pro.
My brother inlaw is trying to convince me to take shots at his wedding, I can't stand being the photographer at family and friends events because it totally ruins the event for me, I am so stressed out! I can't wait until I can do an event and actually enjoy myself too, if that's possible :).
What camera set-up did you use? You're sony? I am still using my 35mm SLR for hired events, my digital set-up just doesn't compare.

Some really great shots there...

Wow I'm glad to see you let yourself use your artistic eye. I hate wedding pictures that are *all* straight on rows of people.

I did a search on google.com for wedding photography. I found this website. It has absolutely beautiful photography. Maybe it will give all of you some ideas for photos as well as post-shoot enhancements.

Really great photos Jen. They all have character to them. Very professional. I like the "non-traditional" shots and angles.

I think you've missed the joke... the quote was "loo this way"....

i used my f717, brought a tripod, wide angle lens, telephoto lens, 8 256mb sticks, 3 batteries, a star filter, a soft filter, a neutral density filter, and my laptop... used all of it, and took 500 photos!
