I believe there have been suggestions for "patterns" as a challenge topic. Sure, it isn't the topic yet, but if it was, I would submit this photo.

The ostrich was mesmerized by the patterns on the zebra for almost five minutes. Finally, it bit the zebra. The zebra jumped up and chased after the ostrich, inadvertently trampling a poor peacock that was showing it's feathers.

Quite the interesting scene. I know the photo's not great quality, but I wanted to share it.

Hey Jason! Thanks for sharing this...and the story. Quite amusing. Animals are sooooo great. I love watching them more than almost anything.

For those that don't know... zebra stripes are a part of evolution of zebras that are actually a defense against attacks from lions, hyenas, etc. When the zebra runs to escape being eaten, the motion of the stripes is designed to confuse the preditor and hopefully cause a failed attack.

BTW, nice shot!

The stripes are particularly effective when running as a herd as the lion cannot tell where one animal finishes and another begins.. This technique has also been used on warships to break up the outline and make identification more difficult

It's always fascinating when Man imitates Nature. There are a zillions examples, like the swimsuits having the same surface structure as sharks and stuff like that.

So Nature has created some good designs I guess ;)
