The XTi, although nice, isn't worth the extra $200+ for the body alone in my opinion. Yes it has the 10mp sensor and the nice AF sensor as well but not a whole lot more. 10mp vs 8mp is irrelevant and if I wanted the nice AF sensor, I would have gone for the 30D instead. The dust thing is pointless and from what I hear rarely works anyway. So if the 10mp and the AF sensor are worth $200 to, then by all means go ahead. The XTi is a wonderful camera, but I'd rather invest the $200 into a nice lens. Just my 2 cents.

An alternative to selling your camera on Ebay, which has it's risks, is to sell, or trade in your camera/lens to Keh.com. Go to their web site and click on the "sell your gear" tab at the top and complete their questionaire about the gear you want to sell. They will give you a quote for what they are willing to pay for it. You could either sell it or trade it in for another camera in their store, new or used.
Not exactly sure why you want to switch to Canon. There's nothing magic about their cameras or lenses and all of the DSLRs these days produce outstanding results in the hands of a capable artist/photographer, including the Sony. Is there something you don't like about it, or what it produces? Don't you have the ability to use the existing line of Minolta lenses and the coming high quality Carl Zeiss lenses? There should be quite a few good wide angle and portrait lenses in that group for your type of photography. If you can't convert Sony RAW files with ACR I would imagine that will not be a permanent situation.
Personally, when I got a gift from my parents, way back when, I would never discard it as it came invested with their love. I don't mean to lay a guilt trip on you, but surely the camera must have some sentimental value to you. |

Honestly, save your pennies and get what you want.
if you already know the D70, I'd personally recommend the D80. It's a very fine camera. beautiful soft shutter sound if you like that and nice in operation as well.
get the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 with a Sigma 70-300 APO MACRO II.
Should cost ya a bit more than a grand, but seriously, you will NOT regret any of those choices. You may wish to upgrade later on, but you won't regret the choices. All of those lenses have resale values of 80-90% of their original prices and do an excellent job.
Alternately, a better choice for someone like yourself might be to go the Pentax route. Their glass is more affordable and almost as good as Nikon stuff in most cases.
If you want to move up later, canon is an excellent route, but be honest with yourself. if you are not going to be prepared to spend 3-5000 dollars in the next 5 years, upgradability is likely a secondary issue. there is a lot more to upgrading than you might think. The cost of the body is one thing, but if you go canon, you must be thinking about their higher end bodies. The cost of the body is going to be at least 2 grand even for a second hand 5D or 1D for quite some time. Moving up in the lens department will set you back a fair bit more though. don't forget as well that the 5D doesn't have an onboard flash either... $$$ if you need flash for anything.
having said all of that though, I'm wondering what it is that you feel is limiting you with that body. yeah, it's got a bit more noise than the others. that sucks. but you didn't mention it. can't edit RAW in PS. Hrm. hardly worth switching systems for IMHO. I have been perfectly happy working with Canon DPP for RAW conversion and jumping to PS 7.0 with actions... I tried CS3, but my beta time has run out and I'm not really missing it that much.
Accept that you will lose money on the body. I don't agree that you should avoid a change for sentimentality. It is a demonstration of the value of the gift by having learned enough from it to move forwards. The value of a camera body is not the body itself, but what you get from it. |

Actually I'd say Nikon and Canon glass is almost as good as Pentax stuff in most cases. :)
Remember that Pentax is primarily an optical company and is the oldest of the Japanese SLR makers. They have a long tradition and history of competing with the best glass makers from Europe and while all companies make fairly average consumer lenses, the Pentax top end glass, (re: primes), is as good as it gets for resolution, contrast and color rendering.
Sure the current range of Pentax lenses is smaller now but due to having just a single sensor format and in-body shake reduction they don't need to duplicate IS and non-IS lenses or produce lenses specifically for the different bodies like one other manufacturer does.
Now getting back on topic.....
What was the topic again ? :)
