In one part of the rules it says you may not use any editing software on your image. In another part it says you MAY edit, crop, saturate..etc. I use MS Office Picture for my images. Is that going to disqualify an entry??

I'd love to help clarify this, but I'm not aware of any rule which says you may not use editing software. Can you quote the rule in question?

Thanks Terry,
I think I just figured it out. The reference to "not using any editing software" is in the "You must" section. It explains that I must retain an original unedited copy for validation if requested. So...if I understand it correctly...I need to save both the original photo and my entry submission photo. I hope I am understanding this correctly

Yes, you are understanding correctly. Make sure that you do your edits on a copy of the original file, and retain the original exactly as it came from the camera. If you're asked to submit an original for validation, this untouched file is the one you need to submit.

Also..I just joined up on the site today.
How do I figure out when a challenge started??
Can't seem to find it anywhere.

Id recommend a change up if you can. If your on XP and have your updates installed (.NET and all) you can use Paint.NET which is a basic to intermediate editor and is free.

Here is my in depth look at it - Thread

That is correct. It's also important to use Windows and not your editing software to copy the file.

If you're not already familiar, the first post in this thread explains how to do that.

Yes, you have to keep your original, unedited copy. Be careful, some importing programs modify your image data in such a way that might get you disqualified, but you probably won't have to worry about it the first time around.

The challenges you can still enter are listed on the left side of the home page along with the dates you can enter. Voting starts at midnight (server time) on the last listed date.

I think that's what I already do. I stick the card in the machine and the Windows screen pops up. Then I copy the image to my Owner's Picture File. Then I open the image using Picture Manager

Am I correct in that I may not submit an image to a current challenge that I took before the start of the challenge? Seems like the challenges only run for a short time but I may be mistaken

That is correct... challenges generally run a week (meaning you normally have a week to shoot the topic).
