Hey all,
Well, after a bit of soul searching I decided that I cannot justify the cost of the new Canon 1D Mark III no matter HOW good it is. I just can't afford $4,500 for a camera body! And I'm not going to sit around wondering what Canon *might* come out with in the next year to replace the 5D. So, I have decided the 5D will be my next camera, and I would like to pick one up relatively soon. The problem I'm having is, I know Canon puts promos, rebates, offers, etc. on their cameras regularly, and the 5D is almost always included. Right now they have a deal on the 5D bundled with the 24-105 L lens. Unfortunately, I don't need that lens as I already have one! And on the 5D body alone, there really aren't any special offers (about $2,600 is the best price I can find). So I guess my question is, does anybody know a reputable reseller that has any really good deals going on the 5D body right now? And I want a place that is NOT in New York, as the sales tax would be considerable. I would love to find a reseller who was willing to split up the body and the lens, and give me a great deal. What do you think? Thanks in advance!

Seeing as L-lenses tend to keep 80-90% of their value, do you come out ahead by buying the package and then selling the lens?

NY sales tax is a bit burdensome, isn't it. I suppose Adorama and B&H do have some benefits though - like good customer service and reasonable returns policies. How about order from New Egg or Beach Camera. I've also been looking for a 5D body alone and I think those two vendors outside NYC had the better prices.

Try Central Camera out of Chicago. They usually have a free shipping deal on orders over $50. I have bought from them a couple times in the past...

Ooh, Beach Camera is in New Jersey. That might work! And their pricing seems pretty reasonable. Has anybody ever ordered from them? As far as getting the kit and selling the lens, I thought about that but that would be a lot of hassle for a relatively small savings after Ebay fees.

I just bought my 70-200mm L series lens through them, They were excellent to work with as I had to return the first lens shipped to me (long story, had nothing to do with beach camera.)

I was completely satisfied and will be using them again in the near future.

Beach Camera is good, I bought my 30D and Tamron 28-75 from them. Never a problem at all. If I were buying a 5D, that's probably where I'd go to get it :-)

If you buy it today from buy.com, you can get a 5% discount:

//www.buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=87646165&adid=17662

If the discount applies to this product, the cost of a 5D body would be about $2470, + $10 shipping.

Here's the link to the 5D:

(Check out the "Smart Savings" deals at the bottom of the page that offer a package deal with the 5D and a couple of EF-S lens. Good luck getting those to work together. :-)

I'd stay away from Buy.com. Here are their ratings. Not good, and apparently getting worse.

Wow, I didn't realize buy.com was that disreputable. I've ordered from them a few times with no problems, but caveat emptor.

I don't believe "EF-S" lenses will fit a FF body such as 5D, they were made for 1.6 crop factor bodies such as Rebel XT, 20D, 30D. ??

You're right, they won't work. They physically won't work because the mirror will hit the back end of the lens causing significant damage to the body. It's not just a matter of a cropped image circle. Who knows why they are selling package deals of items that aren't even compatible.

I just placed the order with Canoga Camera! $2,583 with 3-day shipping--not bad! Thanks for the replies everyone. I was about to order with Beach when I got a PM about Canoga--that saved me a few $$$, for sure. Thanks again--I'm about to be a 5D owner--woo hoo!!!

Yep, that was the point. I thought it was funny that they're packaging those lenses together with the 5D since they definitely will not work on that body.

midwest camera exchange in columbus oh
uniquephoto in NJ

Both are good folks, and not in NY. Usually a tad more than B&H, but you might be ablt to talk unique into matching prices - I have done so in the past. Midwest won't deal much.

Actually, since they don't charge sales tax on internet orders..... that's REALLY cheap. (The IRS requires me to inform you that you have to report it on your state income tax, blah, blah, blah)

The mirror won't hit the rear element, because the lens will not even mount to the camera.

People have taken EF-S lenses apart and using power tools, ground off the tab that prevents mounting EF-S lenses on EF only bodies, but that's probably not such a great idea.

IMO -- Power tools + precision optics = Disaster in the Making
