I got a question on the rule people and pets
Is you got both poeple and pet so rule 1 doesn't apply if you got a pet in the picture? on the stdavidson post |
I dunno... think it would not be bothersome if both pet and person were looking into the camera, harder to do without posing.
But if your concerns go this far then maybe you are taking the challenge topic WAY to seriously. |
I just listen to people complain of low score in this club and you take to serious not me by a long shot.
Another point I don't look at to see what kind of picture you guy want I will get low score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Defined as: *Not safe for work *
Word made famous by the classic movie "American Pie".

Make sure it's definitely posed and setup.

How about:
39 definitions here and 92 more here. |
Best answer yet. Thanks, Brad! (Shannon's was a close second... =)
Off topic - does anybody else close their parenthetical statements with smileys? Some find it offensive...
PS: An obviously "posed", yet wonderful candid:

I'm agonizing over this because I took a photo today that I really want to enter, but I'm afraid that it's going to be accused of being posed. It's NOT, but I can see how someone might think that it was. This is a difficult challenge in that aspect. You can't always tell what's posed and what's not. Do you think it would make any difference to enter it and explain the story behind it in my comments, or are there still people that would mark it lower for looking posed? |

Welllllll... I'm afraid that if it *looks* posed, there's little doubt it's gonna suffer, especially with those of us who are anal retentive. Adding details in the comments won't make a difference since those aren't available for viewing until after the challenge is over...

Oh, duh, I forgot about the comments not being seen until after the voting is over!! Oh well, I think I may just hold off and enter it in the Free Study. No worries about DNMC there! :) |

Alan -You don't know how much I hope that people read your guidelines on this one. Otherwise, it will be an very painful, off putting experience for me to even look at the entries let alone vote on them.
Even though animals, people sleeping, street performers might/could fit the worded definition of candid, I agree when you said "This is a cop-out. Step out of the comfort zone, dudes!"

I'm fine 'stepping out of my comfort zone' but how do you guys go about this? I don't have a spectacular zoom lense (the camera itself has pretty good zoom though). I went downtown during lunch to try to get some pics and I know that I scared away at least one couple (from a good 1/2 block or so)...they walked away gawking at me. I didn't dare take pictures of all the homeless people at the bus station...I would've gotten beat up.
Trying to hide and take pictures seems like a worse idea, as does the in-your-face paparazzi style. Any suggestions? Should I ask for permission after the fact or just move on? |

I really resent being told that a picture of a child or animal is a cop-out. I think a lot of people here forget that we are not all equal in our photography skills. Just because shooting a child or pet may be in your comfort zone, doesn't mean it is in my comfort zone. Judge the pictures on their merit, and give the benefit of the doubt as to whether it is candid or not. |

Not many of us are all that comfortable just pointing a camera at someone out of fear that they're going to notice and wonder what you're up to. But there are ways of doing it!
I just got back from shooting my entry in Pittsburgh this afternoon. I went to a place where I knew there was going to be a performance going on, so nobody around me thought it was weird that I was sitting there with a camera. But instead of spending much time shooting the performers, I was shooting the people who were watching.
I took a decent shot of a lady who was literally sitting at the same table with me, and she was none the wiser.
Ya just gotta come up with your own method of stealth :) |

I know it helps that I'm a chick.... but I just stand there with a long lens and shoot anyone I wish. If they look I either keep shooting or adjust the camera angle so it seems I might be shooting something behind or beside them. I didn't like doing this at first, but I'm good with it now.
THE best candid shooter I've ever been around though is Skip. That man will walk straight up to someone while shooting all the way and as far as I know, hasn't been punched yet! :)
Edit: I saw Skip lay down on the grass 2 feet from a sleeping homeless woman so he could get a close-up.

For the record I think children are fair game....mmmmaybe with the exception of babies.
Now perhaps Lassie knew the difference between a posed shot and a candid moment but pretty much every single moment of any animals life is candid so on the "special candid moment scale" and animal shot would rank super duper low. Just an opinion. |

Problem with that approach where I live is, their definition of candid will probably be a punch to the face, a knife to the throat or a gun to the face, saying "Candid? I'll show you candid you $#%@ $%$#@!%!!, now give me all your money $%#@!"
;-) |
that why you need to have someone drive you around and do drive bys thats my favorite way to snipe peeps. |

Come to Philadelphia for Sunday's Gay Pride Parade - you can dress up for the occasion and no one will notice. |

It's actually gay pride at Disney Land in Orlando right now. I'd love to get candid shots of the families at Disney Land that didn't know it was Gay Pride!! |
