While my previous post addressed themechanics of the voting & communication process, when it comes to the spirit and intent of these challenges, I echo Mousie's statement. For me (and I redognize this may not be true of others), it's not really about the score.
And that's coming fom a HUGE sports fan.
I'm out.

Ditto to Mousie & Moondoggie -- perhaps the site should institute a policy of NEVER having prizes (even a Tshirt!) to avoid problems in the future.
I'm avoiding much of the problems by not looking at comments on my entries until the Friday before voting closes. If someone has a question or complete misinterpretation I can send additional information, but don't need to get all worked-up over people's evaluations for the whole week. After all, I can't change the entry then!
Besides, I'm not sure where all the communications problems come from. I can think of no excuse for making any kind of hurtful or malicious comments -- people are just trying their best. If you think someone is "cheating" remember, they are just cheating themselves and not you -- their only prize can be the respect and appreciation of their peers.
Constructively critical comments are always welcome -- I always feel free to disagree with the critic's opinion. |

Originally posted by Mousie: Why are people so afraid of someone modifying their votes based on feedback? In certain situations it's justified (ask arnit about it) and in other cases it's the fault of the voter's poor judgement. The *proper* solution is to clearly discourage people from changing their votes based on feedback unless it's actually merited.
I agree, I think the dialog and discussion is more interesting than the score. Although my picture (which I'm sure everyone knows which one it is) has had almost every one of the 40 comments say something about the lack of anonymity in it. I honestly don't understand why some people actually object to knowing that I took it. Should it matter on how they vote ? Does the vote actually matter ? I'd hope they wouldn't comment differently about it, because they've seen 2 other pictures I've taken.

"Constructively critical comments" -- I've been looking back over my comments and I certainly hope people take them that way. I often tend to skip over statements similar to "I really like this" -- even though I do really like the photo -- and go straight to the things I think might have made the picture even better.
I think a lot of this is due to my training as a writer. I've commented on a LOT of other people's writing, and, instead of doing a lot of ego stroking, I look for the areas I think can be improved -- then the author is welcome to apply those criticisms to the work or not as he/she sees fit.
That's how I'm looking at the comments I'm receiving. Yes, the ego strokes are really nice, but quite honestly I like the ones that pick at my work even more because those are the things that will help me polish future work. Sometimes people don't get what you were trying to do and they make unhelpful suggestions/criticisms. Fair enough, as long as they were at least trying to help. Those are the comments I can say "thanks" to and then ignore. Others are quite simply just idiots. (I can't say that I've had any of those yet, but I have seen them with respect to others' photos...)
And those are a couple of my thoughts on the whole commenting issue.

Patella, I love your signature. It's kind of a summary of your comment. |

i feel as if we're going around and around ... obviously it's a complex issue and there's no perfect answer.
I just think as long as we promote ideals of tolerance, learning, and constructive criticism, as many people on here have been trying to do, which is a credit to the quality of the people patronizing this site, we're doing all we can. i mean we've already successfully campaigned to have more peopel actively comment, and since then have raised the comment rate at least 300% above what it was when i first participated in challenges..
sure there will be the occasional rhubarbed comment, the occasional miscreant, the occasional thoughtless sociopath ;) - but that's just the nature of something that's available for participation to everyone on the planet with a computer and a modem. as long as you're able to weed out the signal to noise ratio, you'll get a lot from this site.
i preferred the old not-fully-anonymous comments. part of it is being cut off from my commenters until the end of the week. maybe once i've got a week's worth of comments to work with (at the end of the voting) i wont feel so cut off. have to wait and see.
i too have also thought about a double blind system as a solution. either way, every system has it's plus sides and can also be circumvented. so let's just takes what makes the most people happiest, and work with that.
