So.. I try to keep atleast two bettas in my house at a time. Usually males, occasionally females.
I had two yesterday. Their names are Kosui and Sakana..
Well.. Sakana disappeared today.
He isn't on the table or on the floor..
Could have been a cat..
Do betta fish ever spontaneously fling themselves out of their bowls?? |

I don't think so. At least ours has never shown enough gumption to do that. he will sometimes "dive" toward the top of the water, but he never clears it. |

I own a fish shop and a betta can very easily shoot themselves out of their tank, especially if you have the water too close to the top of container. I had a female betta jump out of her tank and land herslf into the males tank close to her. That was so lucky. Usually the water should finish 2-3 cms below the rim of the container. He has probably flung himself out and then flip flopped himself somewhere around the room. Because they can breath air he coulod last a while. I have lost fish and looked for them and have only found them ages later very crispy dry. Sorry for your loss. |

I don't think they are jumpers. The ones at walmart are all lined up in their little specimen cups most of the time without lids and they always seem to stay put.
Nevermind, I guess mine haven't, but they could just be overfed. |

Lost a couple of bettas to jumping out. I now keep a lid on top. |

Terribly sorry about that, I had a hankering for a topping for my cracker.
Bettas are quite capable of jumping out of a bowl. Doesn't explain the missing corpse though.

Dang, I'm going to have a talk with Chopper about his lack of incentive. Or maybe it is that "lid" that goes over the top that keeps him in.
How long do these fish normally live? The first one we had (SpongeBob) only lived a few weeks, but Chopper has been hanging out for almost a year now. |

my husband lost a beta fish when it got trapped under a shell or something in the tank. He swears the angel fish did her in!

I "lost" one when I had him in a cup while I was cleaning his bowl. I went outside for a minute to do something and came back to a fish-free cup. It was opaque, it was plastic, it was on the counter far enough back that the dogs couldn't tip it over, I de-chlorinized the water first as I always did ... who knew the cats were waiting for me to leave him alone there? They probably arranged the interruption!
Poor fish :-( Haven't tried to have one since then.
The guilt, the guilt ... |

I had two beta's disappear on me.. One I found under the table that was 5 feet from it's tank, still alive.. I have no idea how long it was out there, but that's when I found out, beta's breath air too.. (it's true, not making this up)
I had another beta disappear on me.. I looked & looked & looked in every inch of my house and found nothing... UNTIL I MOVED OUT !!..Behind my entertainment center lay the remains of one little beta..I looked behind there a thousand times it seems & never saw it..
I use to run a "beta rescue" in my house and those little guys are pretty sneaky.. Best of luck !! |

I am now conducting an extensive search for the elusive Sakana..
My guess is that one of the cats ate him.. But perhaps not..
EDIT: Typo..

You would be extremely lucky to have a betta live for 4 years. The average life span of one by the time you get it is a bout 2 1/2, maybe 3 years.
I occassionally have customers who come into my shop all upset that their fish went down the sink plughole while they were cleaning its tank. I told them to go back and unscrew the pipe under the sink and no kidding 5 out of 6 of the fish were rescued. |

Joe, you seem to have the worst luck of anyone on the whole site. Sorry to hear about your pet.
When I read the title of the thread, I thought that maybe the fish had been eating people.

I didn't find him, guys.. My cat Mink must have eaten him..
I think my other fish is happier though. I gave him the bigger bowl. And I got him to take two bloodworms from my finger. |
