Hi

Im looking to buy some extension tubes, but although I understand you need to manually focus them what I dont understand is can you still set the aperture with them on? When some say you can only use them fully open, I take it that means using the least detailed aperture on the camera, kind of defying the point of doing a macro? Are these types worthless? I take it there must be two types?

You can set the aperture anywhere you want it. Autofocus will work in some instances and not others.

Are you sure because if they have no electrical connection how can they alter the aperture on the lens if it was no aperture ring on the lens etc?

I don't know. My tubes fully integrate with the camera.

Some have contacts to the lens, some don't. The ones with the contacts allow you to change the aperture else you have to use them fully open. Autofocus still "works" - but manual is way better.

ETA: Ones Without

Ones With contacts

so really it would be far better to get one that allowed aperture adjustment, as manual focus is a must anyway on macro Ive found before using other stuff
