Okay- SWEAR I didn't drop it! But all of a sudden my SB600 just will not turn on... I've tried every battery I have- plus brand new ones- and the thing just shows no sign of life.

It's way past warranty...but I canĂ¢€™t afford a new one.

Any one have any ideas what is going on, suggestion on how to fix it, or a flash they wanna sell cheap?

Maybe try to open it and see if theres any wire hanging loose.

Do you have any ready lights or any beeps at all?

As it happens, I'm trying to figure out something on my SB600 and I have the manual right in front of me.

Assume you have the + and - polarity correctly done. :)

I just have to add that my SB600 just took a crap as well! Mine has a mind of it's own! It goes into modes when it wants, and the LCD flashes non stop on the back. I called Nikon and it sounds like something fried! I'm going to send it back to see how much it will cost to get it fixed... in the meantime, I got a new SB800!

Good Luck! I guess it's SB600 take a crap week!

Press Zoom + the "-" key for two seconds.

Yup, batteries are in right, no beeps no lights- no sign of life at all.

Should I be pressing just "zoom" and "-"?

Heh, you can try it. That process puts the SB600 into the mode where you can set it as a slave to a commander unit.

Sorry, I've looked through the manual and the only other thing I see about it not turning on with no lights or beeps is a warning to not use high-power manganese batteries. Whatever they are, right?

I'm also assuming that you haven't been messing around with commander mode. The SB600 will automatically go into STBY (standby) mode if the camera's exposure meter is switched off, but it should say STBY or BAT on the LCD front of the flash.

You can wake it up out of standby by pushing the power or flash (wiggly line) button, or if the unit is on the camera, by lightly pressing the shutter button.

Just a couple of more thoughts - clean the contacts.

Also, check to make sure that the battery door is completely closed and pressed tightly. Once on another flash unit I had the door broke and wasn't pushing the batteries on the contacts correctly. I thought the flash was hosed but once I replaced the battery door compartment I was back in business.

alright... nothing else is working so I am going to go and try to clean the contacts...

wish me luck :)

Had the same problem and had it repaired twice. It was the switch the first time and the cirquit board the second time. It is playing up again at the moment shooting off the flash when I move it around...grrrrr

HEY! Just figured out that if I push like hell on the battery door, it'll start to turn on. I've never been so happy as to hear that little "powering on" buzz. :)

at least I know the flash itself is okay... but a weak contact with the batery...

Now... how do I fix that?

Did you use it a lot? Are there little bubble in the lens? One of the 3 flashes I've fried from overuse wouldn't turn on anymore. Another would never come ready and the third says low bat after about 10 seconds no matter what.

edit: too slow, but COOL! do the contacts have any corrosion on them?

I don't see any corosion... and I never removed any leaking batteries... of course my husband was using this lense the last time I saw it powered on... hmmmm.

Well I happen to have one of those pen erasers right here... so here I go a-scrubbing.

This thing wouldn't turn on for me at a wedding over the weekend (yea i should have tested it before leaving the house)really hurt me...
I hope I can fix it :)

Thanks everyone for your awesome help!

alright... it just seems that the top most battery is not touching both contacts... not a clue how that happened- but worst I'm not sure how to fix it.

In that article I linked to, someone commented that they used a jeweler's screwdriver to gently lift the contact up about 1mm? It was in a comment, not the original post.

yup- thats exactly what I did. I ended up having to be somewhat forceful about it and pulled the contact/spring up as far as it would go- the thing works beautifully now!

So let that be a warning- remember to be gentle when dropping in batteries!

I imagine thats how I broke it in the first place but who knows- I'm just glad I didn't have to shell out another 200.
