Hey Ben... I'm assuming that you do NOT have the RC1 DVD.

You can try to boot from your XP CD, but don't actually go through with the install. This will verify that your drive is still in working order.

Assuming that is DOES work... I'd borrow a VISTA DVD from a friend, and try booting into the recovery/repair process. Sounds like something didn't work properly on the Ultimate install, and I'm guessing that the driver repair might fix the issue.

I'll ask around tonight to see if any of my friends have seen this issue.

One suggestion I have is if you want to install XP over vista I would pull the CMOS battery and clear the bios. problems occur when you install an old OS ontop of a newer OS such as 2000 over XP.

Make sure you wipe the HDD and clear the Bios and you should be okay.

Good thinking!!! He's got a point there too. It's worth a try

If you need XP or 2000 or even 2000 server CD's I have them ahahhahaa

For instance a 10M file will store 5M on one side and 5M on the other, then grab both when asked.

You can not load XP over Vista... the bootstrap is way different.

And the file structure not the same that is why when installed the beta/rc's we had to do so in a fresh partition. When upgrading to Vista from XP there is a conversion that takes place.

I'm the only person I know currently using Vista... and they all said I was silly! I figured since everything worked in RC1, there would be even better support in the final version! I just rebooted and kept pressing F8. It asked me to choose boot order from Floppy and Hard Drive... no CD listed... that's not good, right? Before I installed Vista I changed the boot order to CD-Rom first, incase it needed to load up in DOS to install.

Correct... that's not a good sign.

I'd follow kirbic's advice and check to see if your bios now has raid support enabled. If so, try disabling it and see if that gives you the CD/DVD boot option back.

What is the boot order in the bios? Pressing delete or F10 right at start up will get you in.

F8 or F12? F8 is usually the one that gives you the Normal, Safe Mode etc etc... F12 is usually the Boot order key press...

Anyways When you turn it on it spins up and you can open/close the drawer correct?

Have you been in Drive Manager?

Start > Right Click My Computer > Choose Manage (computer management opens)

Under Storage click Disk Management
What drive letters are in Use?

The reason I ask is CD/DVD drives are dumb... they don't like being labeled anything > than F:

When I threw in my USB multicard reader (I'm on Vista Ultimate) all those goofy slots grabbed the Low end letters after my HD's (E: F: G: H:) and DVD drive disappeared.

Permanently changing Letters in disk management for each of the Reader slots to G: > whatever. My DVD magically appeared.

Defo F8, but I'll try del and f12 now when I reboot after changing my drive letters. They were D F G H. They are now W X Y Z. Fingers crossed!

I can open/close the drawer in windows, but it doesn't sound like it's spinning. It makes a couple of "errk chuggg" noises like floppy disks used to make but only very briefly.

I know that you mentioned a registry hack earlier. Was this the one ?

//support.microsoft.com/kb/320553

It seems to be the most common fix for this issue.

Okay F12 gives me the *proper* BIOS, CDROM is top of the boot list. I looked for RAID stuff and all I could find was:

Onboard VIA RAID Mode = RAID.
The other choices were IDE or Disabled.

No luck with the Card Reader slots fixing it wither :(

Sounds like you might need to get another one.

How old is the machine itself???

I got it just before I started Uni, so that must have been August 2005-ish

So it's out of warranty and and already giving you problems... Sell it and get a new one. hahaha

by the noises that you typed (and I read them outloud) I would say that your ROM is DOA. Get another and try it then... Stay AWAY from Sony... UGHHHH they suck worse then Paris Hilton.

Did you actually nuke BOTH the UpperFilters & LowerFilters ? Most of the non-Microsoft forums only refer to the LowerFilters.

Just checking...

Neither of them were there in the first place

Never switch to a new OS until SP1 is available. :)

Run off and buy yourself a cheap external (USB or Firewire) DVD player. It ought to work just fine.

So right, Mick! Microsh*t is always so antsy to release things before all (or even most)the bugs and kinks are worked out, that normally I wait a year or more before installing. Nothing wrong with trying it out... but don't ditch the previous system disks.

As for the RAID portion of your system... is your system actually set up to utilize RAID? Have you tried changing it from RAID to EIDE? Don't know how it could have changed by itself... but who knows when it comes with computers?
