I am planning a trip to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico this weekend. I would like to see the bat flight one night but they state that cameras are not allowed. I am sure this is because of all the tourists using flashes. So my question is this, anyone know if there is a way around the no camera rule? Like if I signed something saying that I am a photographer and will not use a flash. Do some places have this sort of arrangement?

Thanks in advance.

I was there last June. It is an awesome display of bats. There is however, no way around the no camera rule. They said it's because of the clicking noises and electonic and laser beams used for focusing. It may through off the bats radar.

He's right. Some things in cameras, cellphones, laptops, and other advanced elctronics mess with the way that the bats function. This sounds crappy, and I know it doesn't sound like a good idea.. But I'd suggest a throwaway camera. I used one of these suckers from the time I was six to a year or two ago and let me tell you.. It isn't as different as it seems. If you know cameras real well, your pictures won't turn out bad at all. I had some really nice ones.. If I can find my notebook sometime tonight, I'll post some. You can always scan and edit the photos to fix them up as well.

Perhaps they won't even allow those..

Nope. But it's dusk when they come out anyway. Dark almost and they move fast. Not the greatest conditions for shooting. Just sit back and enjoy the show. The caverns themselves are the coolest place I've ever been. Some of my best shots ever were taken down there. Make sure you have a good tripod!

Not good for shooting in general.. Even worse for shooting with plastic/cardboard cameras..

Well, it should still be a fun trip. I hope to go there someday when I'm older.

Bummer. I was hoping it was a flash thing and I could work around it. I tell you if I was a bat, the mirror flap and shutter noise would drive me nuts, so I can understand how it can bother them.
