I think it was more of a bed pan than a handbasket, but they are often used interchangably. ;D

HAHAHA She just might have a point. Then again if I can grow it that long, I don't want to part with it.

Excuse me, but I only have a year left in my membership and would like someone to buy me a new one before it expires. Is this the right thread to ask in? |

I agree, yet there are plenty of "enablers" here that continue to take the bait. |

What triggered this thread? Have there been a wave of membership pleas? Dunno, just asking.
I personally would not do something like that & think its wierd when people do. I just avoid 'em. It seems that the free privileges are pretty good these days, no?

What I don't understand is how freakin' hard is it to write a simple tutorial? Free month's membership for a tutorial. |

Skip - I agree 100%. In my first year here I think I gave away a half dozen memberships for one reason or another. Most connected with the Critique Club. What amazed me is the number of PM's I received asking for a membership that did not want to participate in whatever the criteria was at the time. I had to scratch my head when I looked at some of the profiles and seeing their equipment or other info that suggested to me they wanted a free ride and did not NEED a free ride.
I have no qualms about helping someone in need or for genuine reasons. But I do resent being taken for a ride, so to speak. |

Agree with everything that has been written in this thread (with the obvious one exception...shudder)...Dan is right about writing tutorials so here goes
Tutorial
How to get a free membership
1. Remove the 1k worth of kit you have got from your profile
2. Create a thread
3. Post a begging letter in thread
4. Sit back and wait
5. What you want more for a free months membership, not a chance I'm exhausted
Tell the SC I'm waiting for the credit lol

I got my membership free, but I didn't ask for it.. Although I must admit it's the single most awesome thing I have ever gotten from someone. I just quit my job, but when I get better and I get a different job, I think I'll give out some free memberships myself.. Although I'm against begging of any kind for anything, unless it is a life or death situation as is the case with the homeless begging for change, animals begging for food, etc..
When I give out memberships, these are the things I am going to look at.
When did the user sign up? How long have they been on DPC and how long will they stay? If you give a membership to someone who signed up yesterday, there isn't a great chance that they'll stick around and you could very well be wasting your money.
Has the user submitted to any challenges? Do they even own a camera? If there is a user who doesn't have any equipment set up, that's an instant red flag. Why give membership to someone without a camera? Make sure they know how to add their camera. If they haven't submitted to challenges, give them time to do so. Let them get atleast somewhat used to how challenges work. If they are a new photographer (like myself) give them tips or point them somewhere where they can learn. A membership won't do a new photographer much good if they don't know how to take pictures worth submitting.
This may seem obvious, but try to find out if the user has had membership recently. They may be constantly begging and receiving gift memberships over and over again. The one time I'd make an exception to this is if there is someone who is a member, and their membership is running out in a matter of days. I wouldn't mind helping them out once.
To those of you who have given out memberships to newer photographers, major kudos to you. My membership REALLY helped me. I've added quite a few photographs to my portfolio and gotten quite a lot of comments and suggestions for them. I'm sure I would have gotten a membership myself eventually, but I felt restricted without it, and once I became blue, I really started to learn.
But, it's never okay to beg for something. If you need it, you should most definitely get it yourself.. |

i actually read about a certain someone losing their job so they wouldnt be entering anymore member challenges. Then they got a free membership then a couple months later they bought a 2000.00 camera/lens.

Just food for thought here... I never asked for a membership and no one has ever bought me one. However, consider this:
Just over a year ago when I joined, I was really in a bad financial corner. I'd just been laid off from my second job and the credit cards were starting to run out of room. Stupid newbie that I was, I tried to sell some ATCs here to raise some grocery money. The thread was shut down rather quickly (and understandably). Money was very tight for awhile.
However, the loss of that job dropped me into an income bracket that allowed me such a nice income tax return this year that I finally bought my D80 and some lenses.
And then, suddenly, the bank I work for was sold to a private investor who bought us out of all of our ESOP options. I paid off all my debt and put 20% down on a condo. (The seller accepted my offer just today, in fact!)
And to think, a year ago, I was desperate enough to ask strangers for grocery money!
The bottom line is that you never know what someone's circumstances are. A person's luck can change in an instant. Maybe asking for a membership is tacky, but maybe so is looking askance at someone with a gift membership who later buys $2000 of equipment. There might be a story there that you simply don't know about.

Rebecca, that is true, but if the member being remembered is the same one I am remembering, there were other mitigating circumstances that truly made it look like "they" (sic) were just philandering for a free membership. :( |

K - since I have no clue who anyone was talking about, I took it as a generic "anyone". I'd rather not see good people second-guessed just because they had a stroke of luck.

for me, it's not about people's fortunes changing...it's about people who don't really need their fortune to change.
although, as joe pointed out, it would be nice to 'give some back' if one's fortunes did change for the better, especially after having been a recipient...
;-)

I had my membership offered unsolicited by a certain unnamed but lovely and talented DPC member... So I got lucky. Would I have jumped in so completly as I have without that? Certainly not this soon. It says a lot about this community that that happens. So please don't get too burnt out on it.
But while I don't need a membership, I could totally use $25; so if anyone has extra... I'd spend it on beer. |
