I have this Photek portable backdrop system and can attest to the quality of its construction and ease of portability. It comes with a bag to carry everything in, and is stable enough to have a family of four with two kids under 4 plus two dogs running around on it without tipping.
It takes about 5 minutes to break it down and put it up.

What kind of backdrops can it hold? Or better yet, what do you use (muslin, paper) and will they fit in that carrying case? |

A little more detail can be found here. Can hold 11' seamless paper and 12' muslin.

I bought a couple of these muslin backdrops and no, they won't fit inside the case as well. I can fit 5 pony clips in the backdrop bag, and also a roll of gaffers tape, but not much else. The bag has a shoulder strap and is very easy to carry over the shoulder, and I carry the muslin backdrops separately in my hand. I suppose if you rolled the muslin up really tight you could rig the bag to carry it on the outside using the velcro straps it has, but I've never done that.
Weight of the backdrop has never been an issue. I also use giant rolls of paper with it, but I don't travel with the paper mostly because the paper roll is too long and won't fit in my Wrangler unless I have the top off or a window out. :)

Anyone know how that Photek stand compares to the Bogen one?
The photek one is a little cheaper and can go about 3 feet wider and higher.. so it seems a little tempting that way, but then again not sure when i'll need 12' of background. Seems like it would get pretty droopy if you stretched the top pole 12'??? |

| I assume the Bogen is much stronger and will last longer for the extra $100 or so. The Photek is 12.5' long as opposed to the 9.75'Bogen. |

Actually, the top bar is very well made and does not droop even the slightest little bit even when fully extended. It's actually 4 shorter hollow bars that connect together like some tent poles do - twist/overlap. I generally other bother to connect 3 of the 4 shorter crossbar poles, and if you wanted extra length they also sell an extender kit.
With regard to durability of the crossbar poles, in fact, once I did the connection wrong and banged the crap out of it trying to get them undone and there was nary a scratch nor ding nor bend to it afterwards.
I don't know about the Bogen, but I do very highly recommend the Photek. I, too, considered both and was assured by B&H that I'd be happy with the Photek based on what I intended to use it for. Perhaps if you called them with your specific intended uses, they'd be just as helpful to you.
Good luck, no matter what you decide. :)
