i agree....well said gordon.

A garden doesn't have to be outdoors. You'll just have to be a bit more creative with your composition to express 'garden' in your image.

Here is one for all you bug haters.

Macro Jacko.

Amazing how a photo can elicit wonder, amazement and disgust at the same time! LOL

there'll doubtless be many many macros of little critters, from lady bugs to butterflies. look forward to seeing them upclose and personal.

and someone throw in something unimaginably creative. nope, not a tall order at all. haha.

that's amazing jacko, what diopters did you use on that one?

oh and i totally agree with gordon. i could care less about flowers and bugs but photographing them correctly is a lot of fun and beautiful when the capture turns out great. it's really easy to say something bad about a style of photo that is difficult to replicate. go out and try

oh and this would have been my garden shot if it was the challenge a few months ago

Achiral,

I did not use diopters on this one. I just used a macro lens ... Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX Macro lens.

Being sarcastic arent we? :) Nobody said anything about being accomplished in insect or flower photography. We all watch movies but do we have to master movie-making to be able to comment on movies? I dont know anything about making movies, but I know I'd hate to watch reruns of The Brady Bunch all day long! Also, note I did not say I hate flowers/insects photos, I just hope I dont have to go thru like 100 of them in a single challenge, that's all.

What a great week to be in Japan on a business trip :) I wonder if I can find an interesting garden anywhere around here?

I'm near Shinjuku in Tokyo if any locals have an idea for me :)

Will an entry of a flower titled "I CAN'T READ" appreciated ;-)

Just a guess, but it would probably get a lot of '1' votes with the comment "Neither can I..." :)

@myqyl : i just put "botanical gardens near Shinjuku in Tokyo" into ask jeeves and got a few returns, try it... "Shinjuku Gyoen National Park
This garden was donated to Tokyo by the Imperial family and is popular for quiet strolling. The cherry blossoms in spring and chrysanthemums in fall are legendary." they might not have any legendary flowers right now, but that's what we want anyway, right?

Mike,

If you're in Shinjuku, you'll be near a number of parks. One poster mentioned Shinjuku Gyoen, and that's always a good starting point. Otherwise, you can head off to Yoyogi, where the park there joins up with the famous Meiji shrine. Hibiya Koen isn't too far away on the subway, either. But the best thing Shinjuku has is the numerous tiny street corner gardens all over the place, especially as you walk behind the main streets towards ni-chome, the famous gay (homo) area. Don't forget Yasukuni Shrine as the vegetation is often good there, too. If everything fails, just go up the Keio department store and head for the beer garden. Not a plant in sight, but you can get properly watered if you like.

Greetings

Everyone seems to be thinking OUTDOOR garden. What about an indoor garden, a window garden, an atrium or the garden of fuzzy stuff growing in the bottem of the long neglected vegetable drawer in the frig.

HAVE A HAPPY DAY

i predict seeing lots of gardening tools. or people working in the garden.

And i'm also predicting that great shots with flowers as secondary subjects will be rated low because people will be anti-flower for this challenge.

Concerning garden entry pics, I can only speak for myself in stating that if your photo does happen to contain flowers but they are not considered to be the main topic, it's OK in my book.

I predict lots of garden and back yard shots.

They call me 'The Oracle'. ;)

I think we'll get lots of lawnmower closeups :)))

would an earthwarm work? Or would I get this doesn't meet the challenge? I mean it is the insect or whatever it is of the dirt, and without it the dirt isn't as rich!

when does a garden become a park? just wondering. . .

I suppose Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and Kew Gardens (among others) will be fair game. There will be some people with no gardens and so why not a park? That opens it up to gardens of rest, etc.
