I just bought the adapter and holder for the Cokin P series (got a GND). I saw a 'split field' lens that is basically a close-up lens cut down the middle. It seems like it could be fun to play with but has anyone used one? Share your pics or suggestions please! here's a link

Limited use, but it seems quite interesting...

looks fun...but if you want to buy more filters, i'd suggest buying more practicle filters first.

Any suggestions? I've already got the GND4, a circular polarizer and 2 ND filters.

I used one a long time ago, and they do work. There will be an area out of focus in about the middle of the image, with the close foreground and the background in focus. It is useful if you have a scene with something small, like a flower or bug that you want to show with it's environment in focus behind it.

Andrzej Sekula the DP in Resevoir Dogs used one quite a bit to keep actors on both sides of the frame in focus. It is a bit too obvious in the transition zone to be used unobtrusively, IMO.

if I couldn't do it with hyperfocal distance, I would just take a pic of the scene twice (once with foreground in focus the other with background in focus ) and then comp the two in Photoshop. I think I would get better results.

Or indeed any challenges except Expert...

But then there is life beyond the challenges and fotomann's technique is probably the best way to get the result in the real world.

edit: once you've compensated for the focus breathe, that is...

Thanks for all the comments guys. Any suggestions on other cokin filters I should get? I may try that one out at the store and see how I like it.

Star Effects filters are fun :-)

I saw a few of those, they do look kinda fun. Are the diffusers good for anything besides portraits? What about the tinted ones (I saw a bunch of tinted ones that have a small untinted circle in the middle....but those seem kinda useless, IMO).

I just bought the IR and linear polarizer. Also have the diffuser. Like that one a lot. And I think they have a fog filter... A warming filter is good, as is one of the star filters. and the sepia filter adds nice toning...

Yes, you can do a lot of the things in photoshop you can do with a filter. not quite the same and requires more work though. I like to do less in photoshop rather than more...Just personal preference.

WOW! So, let me get this straight. IR will give me a B&W image (not just B&W of course, but IR B&W). Alot of his skies are blue or his trees pink, etcetc. Could a tinted filter in front of the IR do this or is this all PP?

judi's video tutorial

This shows you exactly what you need to do - great tutorial for infrared.
