Just thought I would ask who people's favourite famous dead photographers are. I ask because I'm not an art or photography student but am always interested in famous photos to give myself other perspectives on composition. DPC and other submission sites are of course a great inspiration and challenge but I would like to know who has inspired my peers in this site.

PS- In case you're wondering I'm going through a Capa stage. How can you not respect someone who played such a big part in developing photo-journalism and at the same time had so much fun?

Herb Greene, of course!

;>P

Oh, you didn't mean "Dead" photographer? Sorry.

Then how about
Ansel Adams or Galen Rowell!

Hands down, for me it's Galen Rowell.

When I grow up, photograherally speaking (is that a word?), I want to be like him. I admire the extremes that he went to to get his shots and how well that they came out considering what he went through to get them.

I want to accomplish what he did, short of getting killed in a plane crash.

Thanks for the replies. My reason for liking so much of Capa's work is much the same as Yakatme's reason for admiring Galen Rowel:

'I admire the extremes that he went to to get his shots and how well that they came out considering what he went through to get them.'

Anyway thanks again for the information everyone, I'll start checking later today.

Ansel Adams for me! I have several posters of his prints up on my wall for inspiration.

It looks like I'll have to check out his work too then. Thanks.

The first name that came to mind was Ansel Adams. I went to a showing of some of his work about 8 years ago. Cool stuff!

That's Lord Snowdon, as in the mountain in Wales. His real name was Anthony Amstrong Jones. However, the other royal is Lord Lichfield, and he took many photos of the Royal Family which are displayed in the Royal Family's photo albums.

Personally, I don't really know much about photogs! So, that's about it!

For me, it has to be Ansel Adams. I am not a 'scenery' photographer at all, although the occasional one has slid past my shutter. But he has to be the best at capturing still life.

In the very early 80's, shortly after I left the military, I took a weekend "class" from him on his "Zone" exposures, setting up the perfect shot, and more. I enjoyed his classes alot, but he had died before i could take another one. My loss.

If you ever get the chance to hear one of the tapes or videos of him describing his love of photography and nature, listen carefully. You can feel the love for these two entities throughout his talks. Only love could make a man sit out in the desert for 4 weeks through so much varying weather to possibly (and not definitely)get the shot of the moon in "just the right position" for a shot he would like to get.

The Westons, Don sheever and Karl Schmidt are some of the wonderful photographers also.

Someone let me know when I can start considering Ken Rockwell :-D
