I have no idea what I should get with this gift certificate. I was thinking a monopod or tripod. I have a cheapo Sunpak tripod that I use now. I want something that I can pack with me when I go hiking. A good light tripod with a head on it will cost me around $200 though right? Will I need a head with a monopod? Or should I just spend it on a nice backpack? I have a minipack now but I really need a bigger photo backpack. Sorry so many questions, just don't want to waste the $50. Thanks!

Monopods are nice but most useful with a pistol grip ball head. Monopod = $45 + ballhead = $125 (approximately).

How about some filters? Circular polarizer. Graduated neutral density. +3 neutral density. Pack of stepped magnifying filters (sometimes called close-up lenses...but not really "lenses"). Any one of these can run out that $50.

You didn't say which company the gift certificate came from.

If you don’t have any yet, then you might consider some Cokin filter equipment. I use the ‘P’ filters. It’s neat stuff and not too expensive.

Remind me not to move where you live if a doughnut and a cup of coffee is $50

Print one of your older photos and stick it up on your wall. That's what I do with all the gift certificates that I get.

Oh it's for Shutterbug. Filters are a good idea.
