yeah, it IS possible to compete. but you have to be "the good guy" I think, another sketchy company couldn't do it. I Looooooooooooooooooooove Publix. I havent lived near one in a couple years and they STILL send my kids birthday cards, and actual gifts. magnets, purses, coloring books. when they didnt have soemthing we wanted, they special ordered it without being all rude about it. as where when walmart(my only choice for the last two years being in a TINY town)didnt have something in stock that they were actually supposed to have. like walmart brand soda(the only thing my kids would drink back then) they didnt even apologize for not having thier own friggen soda in stock for two months. theres a HUGE difference between publix and walmart. I adore Publix so much I'd throw my money at them if they let me and when i'm in a city with a publix I alwyas stop for a sub. walmart?...well. I cringe every time i hand over a dollar or swipe my card. but it is usually a neccessary evil.

That is something that I like to see. I used to work for walmart and let me tell you it's nothing like everyone thinks or talks about.

I still hate WalMart.

Interesting, never heard of them. Though we don't have any Wal-marts close to here either.

like my wife said, we loooove publix. what is also important to note is they are slightly more expensive than walmart. the service and enviorment is good enough to overcome that. thier employees look actually happy to be there.

I've been to some Meijer Fresh stores. They rock. Compete with Walmart but everyone I spoke to loved them a LOT more.

//www.meijer.com/

Sadly, privately held or I'd buy stock in them.

I'm curious to hear more about what you mean.

Hate WalMart... why do they have 50 million check outs and only 3 of them are open at one time? Can someone please explain that to me please.. cause I really need to know. I'll either shop Target or online.. rarely do I shop WalMart. Besides I don't want to get my nails done, eyes examined and buy my dog food in the same place.

Publix Supermarkets is not an equal competitor to Walmart.

Some walmarts are tailored to be grocery stores. But in maryland id say thats 1 in 5.

Walmart isnt a grocery store by nature. When i was a kid it wasnt a grocery store at all.

I believe Sam Walton created a retail store not a grocery store. You also cant forget ASDA (UK) and Sams Club all part of walmart's corporate share.

I think the point of the article is that as Wal-Mart enters the grocery field, it has competition that bests it.

Verizon is a phone company that provides TV services.
Comcast is a cable company that provides IP phone service.

Im pretty sure Comcast (at least in maryland heard about being bad elsewhere) isnt as good a phone company as verizon.
Im sure verizons tv service isnt as good as comcasts.

Point out of that is its a partially unequal comparison. Mistusbishi and Daewoo never made a great computer moniter!

The same question could be asked of Target. Furthermore, why does Target use double depth checkouts? Apparently most people can't figure out how to queue up for them which just adds to the frustration.

I'm almost positive that the majority of major retailers have secret plans to move to online shopping only after watching the shopping experience degrade over the last ten or so years. Door Nazis, two checkers for 50,000 sq ft stores, sales clerks that have no idea what the company sells let alone be able to find their ass with both hands, filthy/broken merchandise, no AC, next to zero customer service, etc. It's all an evil plot I tell ya.

I shop at Walmart and always will....as long as their prices are lower then other places. How much they pay their employees and what kind of health coverage they give is not my concern.

My experience is worth more. I do not base my purchase on price alone which is why I am willing to pay a little more for better service.

Unless there is a problem. As long as i can walk into a store find what i need pay for it and leave in a timley fashion.
Then i dont have a problem with them, all the bad press hasnt affected me.

Now lets say their is a problem, customer service and return policys become very important.

I work for a chemical company that sells and attempts to sell our products to Wally World and let me tell you they suck.

They squeeze you of your last penny of profit and then demand more lest lose their business. Not to mention slotting fees for Walmart & other big box retailers start around 400k usd. What kind of smallish US manufacturer can sport that that kind of cash up front. Hell they put Rubbermaid out of business and all of Rubbermaid's manufacturing equipment was auctioned off to a company in china that makes shit for Walmart. They are killing manufacturing in the US to the point we import almost everything. Whats with that man?
