I left this comment on the swingset photo...
My eyes are wandering all over this shot. I'm made to think that the strong diagonals (legs) are suposed to be leading my eyes somewhere, but they don't. They lead out of the top of the photo and lead into the grass. If the swings are suposed to be the main focus, than the legs are quite distracting. If the legs are suposed to be the main focus, than I think that the swings add too much noise for them to be really very interesting. The building in the back is incomplete and doesn't really add anything to this shot either.
I do like how you have put the little fence in the bottom right corner, I think it gives me something solid to look at, but still it doesn't lead anywhere, and doesn't seem to have a major purpose.
Your focus and clarity are ok. And the lighting seems to have no major flaws. Just doesn't really peak my interest much. It feels really incomplete, as there isn't really anything that is totally in the photo.
Hope this helps.

david -- I really like your second shot of chess game, I like that it is off center, following the one 1/3 2/3 rule of placing subject. The lighting while I like it dark could maybe be slightly lighter allowing us to see a bit more of the expression on the players faces, esp. the one with his face in hands. I also really like that there are no distracting objects in the background, I am not sure if you got rid of them or if you darkened out or just an empty room, but it is great not to be distracted by anything. I think this is a really good shot. I think the emotional capture of the players and the soft lighting and empty space make a pleasing and interesting shot. well done.
ps i just noticed a little something-- none of the chess pieces have been moved, the peoples expressions may be a little more believable later in the game--i.e close to check mate vs. opening move : )

swingset-- I think the swingset shot needs some focal point, perhaps a kid swinging or an adult. And while I do like the diagonal in it, if you had taken it from straight on you may have gotten the building and sidewalk out, making swings a bit more of a focus. And if you had wanted the look of 'empty shot' without people, then it would look more empty. Though I often have hard time getting out these kinds of things in my shots. Keep up the good work. |

I agree with the comments (below) of the swingset shot. Also, the fore- and middlegrounds are a bit overexposed. If there is an aspect about the subject here that drew your interest in the first place, It may be a good idea to reconsider it, and then retake the shot with more conscious emphasis on your particular point of focus (?). Apparently, the way it is rendered here, no one can 'see' one.

This is a wonderful capture with little room for improvement. The lighting, too, is precisely 'right', illuminating only that which is essential for the sense it communicates. If you submit it here (DPC), I fear you will run into objections, since photos that leave too much magic or mystery (darkness) to the viewer are usually penalized. I would not let this deter me from continuing to take great photos like this one though. :-) I would change the title: 'Complexion' is not quite synonymous with 'complexity' or 'complexities'.
Considering your age especially, I am awed by your talent. Well done.

it is actually - I thought it wasn't really correct either, but complexion is an obselete/ archaic form of complexity. |

Damn archaic, it must be. None of my dictionaries still render this one, including Oxford. But... you have my interest now, Gordon. I probably won't be able to sleep tonight. ;-)
