I was at the dump this morning and there was a Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 1.28-4.0 Macro Focusing Zoom 62 mm Lens in excellent condition in a nice case. Is this any use to me? Olympus e-1? If not, is it any use to anyone else?

What's the mount?

It depends on the mount, Vivitar make lenses for many different camera systems.

Vivitar Series 1 are professional grade lenses. If the lens...

- is in working or repairable condition
- does not have fungus
- is a mount type that can be used on or adapted to a modern camera

...then the lens may have a respectable value.

Edit:
Some things to do:
- Check if the zoom and focus rings seem to work smoothly through their entire range.
- Check the mount for physical damage.
- Clean the front and rear elements.
- Hold the lens up to a bright background and look through it. Operate the aperture ring and watch the diaphragm. It should move to each position without delay, and the aperture should be a uniform polygon, not mishapen.
- With the aperture wide open, carefully examine the lens for internal fungus. If you're unsure about checking for fungus, take it to a camera store that caters to pros and ask them to look for fungus for you.
- Identify the mount type. A professional camera store may be very helpful.

Assuming the lens is not damaged you have made yourself a good find. Some information about the lens is here:

I have a Vivitar 28mm "wide angle" angle lens that is older than you (yours is mid-1970s) and it has very good optics. Mine is a pentax (screw) mounted lens I that I use on the Canon 10D using an adapter.

You might want to look into an adapter for your camera for it and use it yourself.
