So... I'm just looking at the top 3 images in the free study that just finished and thinking to myself: None of these look to me like Expert Editing was used. I know my own shot has only minimal editing done to it.

I'm encouraged by that. I believe there is a place for highly photoshop'd images and am totally blown away by what some people can do. But my own tastes lean more towards a natural looking image. One where Photoshop is used to make the image look the way I saw it rather than turning it into something it is not.

Anyway, I'm not knocking Expert Editing. I wish *I* was good at it. But I'm glad to see that in "mixed competition" even the more natural looking images can do good.

I don't know, I thought my picture looked really natural even though I used expert editing, i think it can be used to create a hightened situation that is different and strange without makeing a photograph look fake....although it didn't do that great it did WAY better than any other free study entry I have done

Oh the ongoing debate. I agree this challenge had some excellent images that looked great and natural. Photographic skill not photoshop skills rose to the top. I think Expert Editing is extremely valid and serves as the modern darkroom. Most of what is done in Expert Editing is simply what we used to do in the darkroom (that used to take more complicated and difficult methods). Here is my outtake for the challenge which I decided against for that very reason (meets expert editing but not the challenge). The rules reminded us that this is a photography site. Even though I used expert editing I am sure I would have scored very low with this outtake.

I went for another perspective on a triptych (originally it was going to be my entry for triptych but I needed to move too much around and thought it might get DQ'd â€Â¦ this posed the perfect opportunity for the expert edit challenge) â€Â¦
and I thought it was very oldschool dark-room-ish but I think it suffered from the backlash of people who don't like this sort of thing - really, it wasn't over-editted IMO and i think was a fair use of expert edit - but I'm biased ;P.

Not to mention expensive.

I wish some of the EE complainers would realize that this will likely be the norm. I honestly believe that most of the creme will be shots that appear to be natural. I'm sure some comps will pop up on the front page, but they will be well done.

And you, fine sir, are an awesome photog, your skill with the camera doesn't need a lot of editing to rise to the top.

Worth noting is that the images that rose to the top of the Free Study also do not have multiple element scenarios or anything that appears to have been added to the composition. They're "safe".

Many of the images (not all mind you, but many) that are obviously photoshopped or have multiple elements in them, got hammered. Personally I think the voters were quite polarized with two camps. If you had an image that was questionable as to how it was obtained (natural vs photoshopped) then it more than likely settled in the middle somewhere.

Expert editing has a place I'm sure. Some are quite fond of it. I still adamantly believe that mixing so many images together in one large challenge was a big disservice to the DPC community (in either camp - pro/con EE).

I do agree. I don't think it should be used in a Free Study. I also don't believe EE challenges should be run without a corresponding ME challenge.

Or perhaps it should be used in a Free Study, but have a corresponding ME Free Study monthly.

I agree, I used minimal editing on my challenge entry. I've got to go and see a doctor about this sometime soon.. It itches like a bitch.
