You are going to LOVE Canyon de Chelly. Are you staying at Chinle or camping near the canyon? By the way, I heard there was snow in Grants yesterday, (we got quite a bit up here in Colorado), but I imagine it will be gone by the time you go through. If you have the time, the road through Zuni is amazing and you are allowed to take pictures there if you purchase a permit for $5.00 or so. The Malpais is interesting and not something you see in photos every day. If the wildflowers are blooming, the black lava flows make an incredible background. El Moro is also on the way - if you have time to stop, see if the kids can find the "lady in the rock". She's amazing and looks as if she is carved.

Chaco Canyon is always wonderful. The road in is a little rough, but well worth the trip. Just remind the kids to watch for rattlesnakes. They are beginning to wake up about now.

I used to live in New Mexico and loved every minute of it. My youngest son is going to school in Arizona now, so we've done a lot of exploring. Your kids are going to have a great adventure and will remember this trip for a long, long time.

Have fun! (And be glad you are as far south as you are - just looked outside because the rain has stopped here - and found we have about 3 inches of snow already on the ground, with more coming down fast)

I'm not near the slot canyons... I'm not sure where we will be entering Canyon de Chelly yet, but that is on today's agenda. We went to Petroglyphs and Acoma yesterday. Shortly, we're leaving for the Aztec Ruins and then off to Canyon de Chelly for the rest of the day.

We saw some rattlesnake warnings at Petroglyphs (Boca Negra Canyon) yesterday but didn't see any...

John,

Just thought I'd add a special note: While you're out & about in this areas deserts, take pics of every desert flower you come across. Right now everything is blooming and there are flowers out there I have never seen before and I've been here for years. It's kinda like our veersion of Death Valleys 100 year bloom! Hope you're enjoying your trip so far!

edit: really bad typing!

Oops.. i messed up. We didn't do Canyon de Chelly today. We hit Chaco Canyon. Canyon de Chelly comes up on Thursday...

We did encounter a few rattlesnakes this afternoon in Chaco Canyon though. That was interesting :)

Tomorrow, we go to Mesa Verde and Four-Corners...

Nice pix. Hope you had fun in my neck of the woods, even if the trees are kinda small and sparse! (I really should stop more as I drive through.....)

I followed the blog and tried to comment but it wouldn't let me w/o signing in and I can't remember my password.... ugh.
