Hey all, this is my first attempt at black and white. Thoughts? Advice? Tips?

The contrast & lighting is spot on. I just wish you would have walked forward a little and taken one from the railings. The foreground spoils it a little for me. For a first attempt its really good.

I left a comment. The best way to benefit from feedback for something like this might be to post 3 different images that represent some variation in your technique or style and get feedback on those and combine the feedback to refine your style for your next productions.

Hope that helps.

First of all, welcome to the world of post-processing. You'll love it...and hate it...all at one time.

Not bad, especially for your first. I see that the image is in grayscale. Did you just desaturate it, or did you spend some time with a particular conversion method? The reason I ask is that it looks a little washed. You do have a great foundation to start with, but I think it could use a little more contrast. I spent a minute fiddling with it and came up with this.

I added a soft light layer, filled it with red, desaturated and adjusted it with a channel mixer layer than added a slight curves adjustment for some contrast. I also added a small border, as I stand on that side of the never-ending border argument. Let me know if I can help you with anything I mentioned, and good luck!

Edit to add: I also burned the shadows in the clouds a bit using the burn tool at 8% with a few passes.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my photo - all very helpful tips. You're right ericwoo, I did convert to grayscale, and I did this because when I used the channel mixer, I kept getting a really weird pattern in the sky, but maybe I just needed to do some selective levels and I was just being lazy.
