I have shooed this snake away from my pool deck a couple of times now. In both cases, it has been fairly meek and rather than fight, has scurried of and swum across a fairly decent-sized lake to get away.

This is in North Florida. Anybody recognise it?

Thanks.

I would call it a Scary-Ass Looking Bastard.

Looks like a water snake, perhaps a banded water snake with a very dark coloration?

My bet is on Nerodia fasciata (Southern Water Snake) or a closely related species or subspecies.

I think kirbic nailed it. Here's a link with color variations.

Beautiful snake. Glad you didn't kill it.

Most snakes are helpful. It's a shame to kill them.

You should never kill helpful things - not while there are windows to be painted and laundry to wash . . :- )

It's non-venomous from the head and non-stubby tail. I can't ID it specifically. Likely it is a banded water-snake though.

Kirbic might be right.
