Bob, do tell more! Why hasn't the rest of TS gotten the info on this literature paper?

Here you go.

First of all, I didnât start college till I was 36 years old and was married and had two children. A few years later when I was at SVSU, one of the classes that I had to take was American Literature. So, this meant that I had to read books like âThe Bluest Eyeâ and âThe Great Gatsbyâ as well as many different fine works of poetry. In other words, I had to figure out what the author was really trying to say.

Now you have to understand that I am the type of person that deals with life in black and white. My wife always said that I had to learn to deal with the shades of gray in between. When I read something, I took it for what it said and not some deep message that the author was trying to convey. I had such a difficult time with poetry that I would bring poems home from school and ask my 12-year-old daughter what they meant. Thatâs why I always did well in math, it was either right or wrong, there was no in-between.

On the first night of class, I brought the books home that we had to read and my wife saw âThe Bluest Eyeâ and asked if she could read it because she loves to read. Being the average 40-year-old college student that I was, I said, âWhy certainly you can read itâ. So she did and of course she loved it.

Now this instructor really didnât care for me too much but I think I brought some of it on myself. When she mentioned that you could spend an entire semester studying âThe great Gatsbyâ, I said out loud, âWhy would anyone want to?â I got the evil look for that one. For me, it was a real struggle to keep a B going in that class.

Near the end of the class, we had to write a final paper that included âThe bluest eyeâ and several of the poems that we had covered in class. Being that my wife read the book and I didnât, I thought I would ask her to write the final paper for me. I thought, why should both of us read the same book. She said that she would do it provided that I wrote the introduction and the conclusion. I assured her that I could handle that. What a mistake that was.

She would ask me questions like âDid they discuss this or that in class?â I told her that I didnât know because one of the other computer guys and I were too busy playing hangman. Thatâs right, two old guys playing hangman in class. Anyway, I turned the paper in after I made a few changes because I knew the instructor would know that I didnât say some of the things that my wife said.

On the final day of class, I asked the instructor is she had my final paper and she said âOh yes, your final paper, let me get that for youâ. I thought, âOh Crap, she figured it outâ. She handed me the paper and said âby the way, you got the best grade in the classâ. The grade was A-. The only reason I got the minus was because I screwed up the parenthetical citation. So basically, my wife got the highest grade in the class and never attended a single session. Ah college, those were good years.

Ooh - I *just* got home from the post office, where I picked up a 16x20 gallery wrap canvas print of this photo (without the border):

It is gorgeous ! The colours are spot on even ! I am thrilled with it.

Oh my goodness Lea that's gorgeous! What a wonderful print to have.

Hooray, Kashi! So glad you got your colors sorted out. :)

Bob, I'm with you as far as literary navel-gazing. It's why I like Isaac Asimov - he's a straight shooter. My response about The Great Gatsby would've been like yours. I enjoyed the book when I read it a few years ago, and it had some interesting social commentary, but months of analysis?

That is hilarious Bob !!

I have a college story that many have found to be amusing as well, and I'll share just because all the kids are currently playing quietly and I actually have a moment to myself.

During my 2nd year of college - I lived in a house with a few guys, 1 of which was a classmate of mine. We were taking an "information systems" course - basically database programming and the like.

Well, we had wired our house to have a completely makeshift computer network, which required some unusual wiring techniques (being a rental house and all).

One day one of our professors was at the house (I don't recall why now though) - and we showed him the networking and wiring we'd done. We both got a fair amount of extra credit for - as he termed it - applied knowledge.

Yes I saw that ;) I have been playing since December of last year and have never done that great.

I must be weird, because I think I would enjoy a semester-long study of The Great Gatsby !

I think I could go faster if I could get more questions on my screen; scrolling was pretty slow. Then again, it's not like I got a 10 or anything.

I just got a 10 on today's trivia, and am in 2nd place behind Kernodil. AND, not to toot my own horn (okay, a little tooting) I didn't look at the questions on e-mail first!

Hmm? There's some way of seeing the questions in advance? I got a 10 yesterday but a 9 today.

What do you mean by this? Is there a way to get the questions before hand? I was wondering how people could possibly answer in 30 seconds! I've been playing for months and months. I've gotten plenty of 10's, but have never come close to the fastest time.

Truegsht is lost in space - switch him out to Zombie land?

Yes, definite zombie material.

Christian,

When you get a chance switch out Truegsht to Zombie land.

That way we will have an open spot for our next sucker.

ok. but, do you mean team zombie, or should i make a sort of holding pen, for members, who aren't that active at the moment?

05/02/2007 02:13:35 PM · #1498
Zombie is the code name for holding pen.
