There isn't an official process yet, but several people have started various forum threads regarding new teams, so I suggest you read through those and make it known that you're available in the ones that are looking for team members... or even start your own thread about starting a team. However, once the official signup process is made available, I'm sure there will be many teams looking for members at that point as well.

Do we know what the thread name will be yet or what Catagory it will be under so I know what to look for?

Keep an eye on this thread and the announcement forum and you should be kept up to date on the DPL. It's coming soon!

Some of these questions have been answered already, but I thought I'd give this thread a little bump. Please excuse any typos and feel free to ask for clarification. Also, feel free to ask any other questions that may have not yet been answered.

Question #1

jdannels: When are sign-ups? Is that May 1st?

EstimatedEyes: How long are you thinking the sign up period will be ... If May 1 is the first sign up date, when are you thinking the season will start?

Answer: When the season is announced (likely Monday, May 7th), the Free Agent Pool will be open to all, and previous-season participants will be given the opportunity to recreate their teams in the new system for the first two days. After the two day "invitational" sign-up period is over, the team creation system will then be open to all for the final 5 days of the first week. Upon "rollover" of the first week, all "finalized" teams (teams that have at least 5 team members who have accepted team invitations) will be placed into one of two leagues, one of four conferences within those leagues, and one of the numerous divisions within those conferences. The challenge announced after rollover will be the first challenge that kicks off the new season.

Question #2

freakin_hilarious: Will the running total of finalized teams be visible? Say for example there are 71 teams signed up 10 min before sign-ups are closed. We could all badger the DPC community at that point to create one more team so the other 23 that would otherwise be dropped can play.

Answer: Absolutely! The list of actual teams that have made the cut already during sign-ups may or may not be public, but the count certainly will be.

Question #3

Cutter Will you be handicapping teams?

yanko What I wouldn't mind seeing is an "average" cap. ... This would require a new stat however as using the average vote received stat is very deceiving as it doesn't reflect how a photographer is doing.

Answer: We discussed having a cap on team average, but the first season won't have any sort of restrictions. Past precedent would suggest that it's not yet necessary. Hopefully, there will never be a need, as it would be a shame to break up teams from season-to-season simply due to high averages.

Also, due to efforts over the last few months with statistics, I currently have 30-day and 6-month received averages being calculated. The free agent pool will likely show these statistics, and ideally a future photographer statistics page. Teams will be seeded into divisions using these averages.

Question #4

JawnyRico: I also would like what I need to do to join a team. Heard a lot about WPL, but never been sure of what it is. Is it like a photo a week thing, and how do you join up? Is there another website you go to. Thanks in advance.

Rooster Just not sure how to go about being drafted onto a team. How does one do this?

Answer: Your best bet right now would be to either contact some people on the site privately about creating a team together, or putting yourself out there in the forums to let people know you're interested in getting a team together.

My hope is that some photographers will try to sell themselves exclusively through the the Free Agent system and that some team captains will reserve a spot or two on their team for pulling a random user from the free agent pool.

If you join the Free Agent pool, you'll be listed amongst the others as "actively seeking a team" and you can be invited to join multiple teams.

Question #5

sher: we'll still be able to post in the regular "Side Challenges & Tournaments" threads, though, won't we? the good natured banter and trash talking is really the most fun for me. i'd hate not to be able to do that anymore.

Answer: Yes, the existing Side Challenges and Tournaments forum will still be open for this type of public discussion. The private thread will exist so that each team can stay organized by discussing scores, trading advice on new entries/ideas, or just using it for motivational-type chatter.

Question #6

TCGuru: So, here is my question for the FAQ: HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED?

jpfrandano: What is the current process for creating a new team for Season 5? Do I have to wait until the integration with DPC is complete?

Answer: We'll have a team creation page, where upon rollover, the team captain can go in and (1) name the team, (2) upload a logo (currently only 120x120 JPGs), and (3) invite all team members (by typing in their usernames or inviting them from the free agent pool). Once the team is saved, invitation emails will be sent out to all team members. At least 4 team members will need to accept the invitation in order for the team to be "finalized" and reserve a spot in the next season.

Question #7

metatate: Will there still be an MVP? â€Â¦ of DPL? Will that person get a .GIF. I want that GIF!!!

Answer: There will definitely be some sort of lovely GIF given to the winning team, and lots of statistics all around, though no MVP listing/selection is confirmed for the first season right now.

My "question"...#3 was a total joke....I wasn't serious with that question-for the record.

I don't think there should be any handicapping, dismantling or anything.

This should be fun though. Good job everyone involved.

Seems unusual to start a new Season, in the middle of the year.

Although in WPL4, my First time participating,
I anticipated a more of a combination of seasons (Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall) to compete in. Some photographers enjoy and do well in certain seasons. Yes it's a challenge to do amazing shots of any category, at any given time of the year. Sun and rain can be staged in a studio setup.

It just would seem more fair to members from all parts of the world, to even out the Worlwide full of Opposite seasons.

Maybe have the season from MAY through OCTOBER.

It's just like a sport season (e.g. not a full year), so there is more than one season in a year.

This is an AWESOME quote!! From a guy who was unfortunately weakened and eventually killed by trying to empower the weak. Ironic, huh?

Anyways, it's still true. We're not here to remove the competion, we're here to get as good as they are. This is a LEARNING SITE. It's amazing how much you learn from failure.

I thought this quote pertained to TX schools....wha? Oh. Was that my outloud voice. Oops! Muaahahahaha!

I want to learn and last season I sucked...just ask my team. But I'm getting better and they invited me back, so let the games begin!

Two questions then:
- Does the team have to be recreated by the previous-season captain, or can any member do it?
- Does the team have to have the same name?

Thanks

WPL stood for World Photography league which has been taken over by DPC and is now called DPL or Digital Photography League. It's a league made up of teams with 5-7 photographers each. Each week teams are pitted against each other and the team with the highest 4 scores of the week (averaged out) wins. The season lasts for anywhere between 5 and 9 weeks depending on how far your team advances in the playoffs. That's it in a nutshell.

On these team profiles, what all is included in this? Is it going to show team averages, ribbons won (during DPL or overall team totals), and other stats like on a normal profile. Will you be a able to see a "Team Portfolio" where you can see what entries that team has entered and how they scored, without having to click on each profile individually?

I have a stupid queston for anyone that knows this. I'm sure it's in this thread somewhere but with dinner cooking and some other things coming up I'm just to busy to read thru it all so if you know where it is I could use a copy and paste or just a straight up answer.

Okay so now the question:
1. Once the teams are created and the pool and the signup period is closed, Who and how exaclty is in charge of keeping stats and the top 4 from each challenge? Is it something that the team captian has to do on their own or is there a mass site that takes all this data?

It'll be done automatically by the DPC site I'm 100% sure.

One of our team members is going to be on vacation when sign ups are announced, and may not have immediate access to a computer ... is there a way to pre-accept an invitation so as not to delay the team qualification and assure his place on the squad?
05/04/2007 02:57:43 PM · #96
I believe the team is qualified as soon as it reaches 4 members, so one person being away shouldn't be a problem.
05/06/2007 10:57:40 PM · #97

I like the concept of teams in photography challenges.

Should be fun and interesting.

So I've signed up as a free agent. Hopefully

I'll be invited by one of the captains.

However, I am wondering about fair competition. Is
there anything to keep a captain from inviting
only the very top photographers to be part of their
teams? You might have teams with an average received score
of 5.0 going up against teams with an average received score of 5.8.
Are there any rules to keep this team competition
fair and balanced?
