Okay.....When you say drag & drop, I'm that stupid I don't know what that entails.

When I open PS, I know I can have other screens open, but how do I move from one to the other?

How do I do the sizing? Do the math, size the image, then install it?

Can it be 720 square?

-Open the images you want to use in PS. You'll have 3 separate windows with the 3 images.
-Create a new document in PS. It'll ask you for dimensions as it's creating it, say 720x720.
-Click on your image, keep pressing the mouse button, and drag it over to your empty new document window.

my method - drag and drop explanation is included...

I cropped all the images I wanted to the same size, and then selected under "Image" the canvas size option, added .6 for an extra border (choose your color and play with border size if you like it thicker/thinner), and did any other image processing at this stage too.

Then open a new file and size it to the height of your images (or slightly larger if you want to enlarge the height a bit) and at least 3x the length of the image crop.

Got to any of your images and Select menu - "all"; then Edit menu, "copy"; go to the new file and Edit menu, "paste"

Right click the copied image and choose "free transform", this will allow you to move the images around into place; double-click when you're done positioning and this will set the image in place. At this point if you want to increase the height or length, you have that option too by clicking the small box that shows up on any side of the image (BEFORE you double-click to set the image). Repeat with next image.

Once you have everything in position, crop out any blank spots in the new file and flatten the image. Choose Image menu, "image resize" to resize the longest side to 720.

I hope this makes sense, let me know if it doesn't.

My hat off to all of you who are in for triptych. We've had too much company (pretty much for a solid month) for me to have time to put one together. Oh well, another time! Will enjoy voting, anyway.

I should add - overshoot the new file LENGTH by a lot more than 3x - I found myself unable to clearly estimate the addition of the borders, and had several false starts with too-short new files. You can always crop out the overage later.

that's ok, just make sure your new file will accommodate the total width and height of your three images arranged together

once you get them in there, you can arrange them however you like, you just need to set up the environment to the right size first

and you can resize them within the window too, if the sizes aren't quite matched yet

one important point is that I was at a loss to figure how to add borders after getting them into the new file - adding borders before they go in seems infinitely easier - as you position the images around you may overlap them, so you can take the border of one and overlap on the other image's border, and so avoid weirdly thick borders on some edges and not on others...

Be careful, don't get too specific. We don't want to be able to recognize yours from what you say here.

im entering in tryptic too, its been a long time since ive entered this much...yes, thats sad i know.

I was looking at your top rated photos, and felt as though I was looking at a tryptich. The silhouette shots are beautiful and go so well together.

Sorry......but I don't think it'll much matter.

I think this is more than I can figure out.

Am I supposed to have these images open at the same time in PS?

Oh, no, don't give up! You've got 5 hours, and if you've got the images already, it's really not that hard from there on. We can get you there :)

I've got a triptych in that I'm not thrilled about, and a symmetry entry that I *am* thrilled with.

Yes, have all of them open at the same time.

don't be discouraged - all the steps might be a bit daunting, but it's really easily done, you're just basically clicking and dragging things into position, provided you did all your other image processing work on the images individually. If you look up the properties of each image it should tell you the pixel width and height and you would just add them up, according to whatever image arrangement you settle on, and put those in as your WxH values for the new file, with maybe a little overage to cover estimation mistakes, then crop out the dead space when you've got everything in position.

Good luck with it, I need to step away from the computer for a little bit but PM holler if you need me and I'll walk you through a bit more later on. I put so much time into figuring this out yesterday, it'd been a shame to waste it - I'm happy to help.

Jeb, I just picked a shot, processed it till I liked it, minimized it, picked the second shot, processed it and minimized it. Same with the 3rd. Then while they are minimized, open a empty canvas( New file) size it 720 x 720 or whatever size you want.

Then one at a time I open the picture, copy it, then paste as a new layer on the empty canvas.
After you get them all on the canvas, select your pick tool to move each shot where you want it.

Jeb, I started with a large empty CS2 file. Then opened my first image. With that image active, I did 'select all' and 'copy'. Then I made the empty file active and did 'paste'. This created a new layer. I was finished with the first image file, so I closed it. Then on the layer with the copy, I selected the whole image and used 'edit>free transform' to resize it to about one third the width of the background canvas. I used the move tool to slide it to the area I wanted it to be. At that point I added a narrow border to the image.

Next I opened the second image, and repeated the whole process. And then did the same with the third image. When everything was in place and to my liking, I cropped away any excess background, added a border to the whole thing and resized it to 720 pixels on the longest side.

The tryptich construction wasn't very hard. What was hard was getting the light, tone, saturation, contrast, etc. to match up between the three images. But since they were all on separate layers, they could all be adjusted separately. Finally, I did a few adjustments to the thing as a whole.

Hope that helps.

Do I double-click each time to lock the image or leave them all on free transform?

I have the first two images locked and I can't get to free transform on the third for some reason by right clicking and I've got overlap that's ruining the triptych.

I'll *NEVER* get that hang of this damn program!!!!

Don't mind me lurking around here, absorbing all this useful mentoring within Team Suck. I'm officially "in" for the triptych challenge, and I should get my Pi shot uploaded later tonight. I'm sad though, apparently halfway through my Pi pictures one of the shots corrupted the card (1.64Gb image? my camera isn't that nice!) and I couldn't get at any of the images taken afterward.

CRIKEYS!!!!!!! I thin' I gots it!!!!!

Thanks, guys, y'all are the best!

It's onviously my first effort, but I think I can doink with it enough now to get an entry.

I put my Free Study together last night, and I might have an idea for Symmetry.

Best of luck to all and thanks a million!!!!!

My free study image got submitted about 2 weeks ago. It's probably not the glossiest, most widely appealing image I've taken all month, but I thought it was one of the more interesting. Can't wait to see what the masses make of it :)

great! knew you could do it - as you can see from all the advice, there's more than one way to skin a cat with CS2, so if one method doesn't strike your fancy, you can pick another one. :) I didn't know I could do more editing on the images once I got them into the new file until JulieBloc's message, learned something new there.

CS2 is becoming less of a mystery the more I work with it, but I suspect it will always be a mystery in some way no matter how long I work with it - too many features! :)

I have PSP so I'm thinkin' the pick tool is to PSP what the move tool is in PS.

ya know what...you better not listen to me! LOL
