One of my mentors tells me regularly - do not take photographs of 'things' - you're not photographing a crime scene. What is left after that? Usually I'm trying to see light, shape, tone, or mood with the camera. And every once in awhile I have to throw in the totally absurd which the triptych I submitted represents that well. |

Deb, you're an artist in my book, this image in particular comes to mind...
If that's not art I don't what is!! Thats just one of many.

Yep, I are an engineer by training. Could explain why I tend to take pictures of things that are in some way structured, orderly, balanced, etc. Though I find I'm drawn to the pictures of others who do NOT do these things.
By the way - I don't tinker much. I do have a set method when something doesn't work, though:
1) Is it plugged in? (If applicable, of course.)
2) Is it turned on? (Same caveat as above.)
3) Kick it or hit it - see if that helps.
4) If all else fails, buy a new one.
And thanks, Jack, but my lovely blurred birds is a very happy accident. One of those times when one is simply grateful to have a camera in hand. :-) |

This is why we get along so well, Deb. :) I could've written those exact words about myself. That's why I'm so thrilled when I manage to connect on something that doesn't rely on geometry. On the other hand, it's also why challenges like symmetry come pretty easily to me.

um, but that's what a great deal of art is. happy synchronicity. the art of being an artist is to recognise it when it happens.

That's the great thing about photography, everyone does it for different reasons. I myself just shoot to capture moments in my life and things happening around. I personally have no aspirations of being an artist and trying to capture something artistic. Though I do enjoy those who have their own vision. Sometimes I do find myself just shooting things for a challenge and at those times I usually hate whatever image I just took.
Cheers all, sounds like we have a lot of Suckers in for Triptych, can't wait to see your images. |

I must be an engineer, cos that has always been my way when fixing things that are broken or won't go. I tended to use a Birmingham Spanner to fix things on my cars years ago!
NT. A Birmingham Spanner is a hammer, preferably a big, heavy one! |

exactly - there would have been plenty of people that would have deleted that "happy accident" off their memory cards when they first laid eyes on it. You saw the beauty of it and made it available for all of us to see - that's your "eye" for art. |

Deb, you most assuredly ARE an artist, at least in my book. Some of your photos have made my jaw drop open, in the manner of "wow, I wish I had taken that."
I got a great comment from Don ( Posthumous) on my bubbles entry - really made my day! Thank you! |

Yep! I'll edit to "Who's wrong" :) |
Well ... I was gonna edit it to ... Who's exclusively right ... but ...

whew! another item on my to-do list to scratch off - finished commenting on all the TS entries for Hair and Landscape; great stuff, I don't know about all of you but I benefit enormously from taking the time to give images another look and think about "why" I like/don't like them. I'm learning a lot. Hopefully the benefit cuts both ways.
on another note, who are the Team Suckers who will be participating in the 30 day black and white side challenge? Maybe we should occasionally declare our portfolio submissions for that exercise on this forum too, so that all the members of TS might have the opportunity to join the commenting party if they like? |

Exactly my point, No point in fighting it Deb, you're an artist!
I just made it in for Triptych, after roughly 9 hours of working on it yesterday and today, I think it's pretty cool, and I will be really be upset if it gets over a 4, I SO want to be misunderstood!! ROFLMAO. I am sure it is way weird for DPC but oh well! It is completely outside my comfort zone so it was pretty fun to do!!
Good luck all!

I'm in for the B&W challenge. Going to be tough, but hopefully I'll learn a few things.
Also, thanks for the comment it was very helpful. |

Yeah.....yeah.....I know......
I said I wasn't even interested in trying. Now I have a series of shots that should make a wonderful entry in Triptych.
And I don't have the foggiest clue how to make one.
Anyone wanna give me a crash course?
I have CS2 and I about half know how to use it.....some days......

*yawn* I'm so tired. I need to quickly make a costume and finish a 5000 word project write-up tonight, then I can go to bed... It's times like these I wish I'd spent more time working regularly and less time drinking, spinning fire and taking pictures... Oops. :)
Oh well, painful consecutive all-nighters before hand-in deadlines are what uni life is all about really. |

This is what I did...

Erm, I'm not sure if this is the best way of doing it, but what I was planning to do was:
-open a 'new' photoshop document, sized 720x720px
-drag and drop the 3 pictures into it, and resize them using free transform (if you hold 'shift' down, it preserves original proportions)
-play around with the rectangular marquee+stroke function to make borders
-fill any empty spaces between pictures using a paint bucket
-trim any remaining empty space
If anyone has a better method, let me know.
Hope this helps!!

Okay.....When you say drag & drop, I'm that stupid I don't know what that entails.
When I open PS, I know I can have other screens open, but how do I move from one to the other?
How do I do the sizing? Do the math, size the image, then install it?
Can it be 720 square?

lol Indeed. I've had plenty of it in the last couple of months, and it turns out I'm good at it. Foresight - no. Time management - no. Common sense - no. Working under pressure in the last 24-48 hours because I have no choice - yeah, I kick ass at that :) |
