Give the icelanders a run for their money? A worthy goal.

Welcome, Sean, to the krazy kommune! Please do hang out and post. You're right on track about why we do this. :)

Now, many of us still like high scores, but they're a bonus as opposed to the main goal.

Speaking of which, I seem to be in some danger of having two 6+ scores in a row, which has happened only one time before:

Now that Sean has spoken up, let's get some more of our lurkers to say hello.

I mean YOU! Yes, YOU! There in the corner. Yes, I can see you. Might as well come out and introduce yourself.

Well, we looked at two houses today. . .

that first house was SO bad !!

I mean the expose wiring, the water in the basement, the uneven, likely original floors (upstairs only), the holes in the walls that showed the lathe & plaster, the lack of a bathtub, or even a full bathroom door ! The basement wasn't a basement as much as a cellar with stairs that need to be replaced. The banister upstairs needed to be replaced too, it was very loose.

Even if we'd liked it, we could not have fit our bed up the stairs because of the low ceiling over part of the stairs.

We didn't even bother with looking at the yard - the house was just that bad.

I'll give it credit where credit is due though - the main floor - the living room has been refinished recently, laminate flooring and such, and the windows are fairly new.
DH said the furnace and water heater looked new (2006).

We then went to the townhouse - but due to what sounded like some miscommunication somewhere, there wasn't a key available for the realtor, so we weren't able to see the interior. We decided to meet again Wednesday morning.

The complex is fairly small - 2 rows in kind of a "V" shape. There isn't a playground in the complex, but one is right behind it. Each unit has a privately fenced small yard. I emailed the selling agent earlier today and found out that stove, fridge, washer and dryer are included. That's all I know right now.

You better listen to him...have you seen his night shots?? This man can see in the dark!

Welcome Sean! Please join in when you have the chance. I am new to TS myself and the thing I notice most of all is that everyone here is amazingly talented at what they do and all are willing to help. It's a great place to be!

ETA, well except me, lol. I am new here so I am still learning and growing like the rest, but not so amazing at what I do...yet!! but if I can I will gladly help!

Just saw this and have to say.... Awww, thanks Deb!!

COOL!!!! It's DUDE!!!!!!

Hey, Sean, welcome to the playpen!

Yo, guys! This is the one-and-only Sean, my mentor, friend, instructor, sounding board, tech geek, and all-round good guy whom really got me hooked here at DPC and started me down the path that TS has turned into a four-lane and paved for me.

He was OOB before I even heard of it, when everyone was shooting graveyards for death, he took a blue with this:

When everyone else was doing the bar /city extravaganza for neon, Sean took an extension cord to the desert:

Just rummage in his portfolio and you'll see why I glommed onto him like a remora with superglue!

He's also the creator of that stunning and heart-rending silhouette shot that cut right to the core of me when I first got here.....the one that I talked about sending to W from DPC to carry the strongest message I know

And......he's the one that told me that the thing with the zero and the little + and - hashmarks in my viewfinder was?????

AN EXPOSURE METER!!!!!!

Without pointing out what a dolt I was to have had the camera for five months and not known what that was and how to use it!!!

I never had a camera off automatic in my whole life before he taught me, easily I might add, about how the whole aperture/shutter speed relationship works.

He's my He-ro!.....8>)

Anyhow, now that I've thoroughly embarrassed him, y'all welcome Sean and ask away at him, he's regular folks and damn sharp for someone who's just a kid......beggin' your pardon, Svetlana and the rest of you youngsters here.

And tonight I learned that what may seem like the BEST IDEA EVER is sometimes that which should never see the light of day - my idea for Pi made it to the upload-to-my-computer stage and I can say without hesitation that it sucks so bad it I shouldn't enter it. It's not worthy to even reach brown status.

No triptych idea, ditto Pi - bleh.

Somewhat lighter side? My Bubbles entry has been rising - up from 4.7 and some change to flirting with 4.9 - it still sucks, but people are apparently warming to it. Kitchenware still hangs in just a hair under 6.0.

And that's all the news that's fit to print. Goodnight all,

I'm so excited about the triptych, and it's such a neat opportunity to expand our storytelling via photography, that I'm going to pop out one of my every-once-in-awhile subject lists. Use at your own risk. :)

Growth - baby, toddler, adult (or any mix of ages, even with different people) - go to a mall and shoot candids if need be
Love - two hands, kissing, baby (I'd LOVE to see this done, because I planned to do it but now I'm using a different idea) or holding hands, two champagne flutes with a ring in the bottom of one, rice in the air
Eating - whole juicy hamburger, one bite taken out of it, the restaurant check
Vacation- a map, packing the car (luggage sharp in foreground, car blurred in background), two people admiring a sunset/mountain/lake/whatever
Giving someone a nice photo as a gift - studio setup, dark picture of someone hunched over a computer, framed photo
Anything sport-related - one example is showing someone throwing a frisbee, the disc in the air, and someone jumping up to catch it.
Cooking - ingredients laid out in an interesting way, a pan with sizzling oil in it over a flame, a plate with delicious food on it being carried into the dining room (plate sharp in the foreground, dining table with candles, china, and crystal blurred in the background)

Basically, think of something you do or see and break it into three chunks.

Since you mentioned gift, here is something that I have been wondering about. What size print would work with a triptych? I was thinking about doing one of my boys, and was trying to figure out how to set up the size of the image and how to print it. I've never done one before - don't they end up kind of rectangular? Do you just figure it all out to make it fit an 8 x 10?
04/27/2007 11:48:46 PM · #1062
Can't help you, colorcarnival - I've never set one up for printing.

But if you know you want an 8x10 at the end, you can either choose 1/3 of the width or height for each picture, or choose one to use half of it and the others 1/4, etc. No magic formula, I'd imagine.

Hi Sean, welcome to the clubhouse. And blessings upon you for your patience with Jeb. :-) (OK, just giving Jeb a hard time.)

I actually have something I shot for Triptych but it needs some work editing wise. Anyone know for sure if I can use transform tools in advanced? I'm pretty sure I can (well, that the rules allow it, not that I actually CAN use the tools correctly).

Too bad Karen. You must be really bummed out by that.

With the tryptich, I find it really appealing that you can capture really quite complex ideas using 3 images. I mean, you can do that to an extent in any challenge with just one photo, but it's very appealing to be able to capture different dimensions of an idea.

So my list of interesting concepts (to add to levyj's one) would be:
-Capture an emotion. Ecstasy. Depression. Grief. Lust.
-Capture an aspect of society. Poverty. Goth culture. Consumerism.
-Capture an idea. Determinism. Evolution. Emancipation.

Really, just pick something that captures your imagination, think about the different facets of it, then try and express them as images. And see what happens...

Karen, things could be worse. My Pi idea just set off the fire alarm and woke up my flatmates at 5am, and I don't even have any photos to show for it!

(the original idea was meant to be done outdoors, this was a quick fix version that really didn't work out)

Well, let's just go to the horse's mouth. The advanced rules say you may "use software to correct perspective, lens defects, or minor misalignments."

Sure sounds like it to me. :) And I plan to use them to some extent.

I just wanted to share this tryptich that I created last February. I was trying to show three aspects of my dad. It was kind of like doing art therapy. (I've never done art therapy, but I imagine that's what it's like -- creating art as you delve into your suppressed feelings).

boy, I was pretty tired last night and I think I overstated a wee bit - "best idea ever"? LOL - more like, "hey, this is pretty neat" (and it's my *only* idea).

It's only since joining that I've actually tried to "see" an image and then make it happen - usually I just go out and point my camera at things and shoot (nothing wrong with that). My point, and I do have one, is that the envisioning process is a deliberate one for me, and new, and sometimes even in a way "painful" (in that such ideas for images don't seem to come naturally for me). It's exhilarating when it works (you produce something that is or is damn close to what you thought up), and when it doesn't it's kinda depressing. :)

Jeff, thanks for the triptych tips (say "triptych tips" 3 times fast, I dare you) - I thought of some of these themes myself, just can't seem to cobble together something visually interesting from the "props" around me. I did think of one thing, which I think might have ended up being quite out of the ordinary and funny, but no way to execute it (don't have the right location), or at least I've run out of time to find a way.

And of course, there is the fair point that I've become so caught up in the new exercise of deliberately visualizing a shot that I've lost sight of just-go-out-there-and-shoot-until-you-find-your-subject. Now I have to learn to stop dithering if I can't think of an idea first and just go shoot things anyway. :)

Always learning on this site!

Professional gig #2.....I'm going to a retirement community to talk about why I'm a photographer and what it is that photography does for me.

When I heard that they were looking for artists and whatnot to come in and talk about what they do, I figured, sure, I have time for something nice like that......they said they couldn't pay much....I had to laugh.

Sp, maybe one of these Saturdays, you'll find me at Hershey Gardens with a crew of retirees shooting flowrers like crazy!

Later.....I'm gonna be late if I don't go now.

Thank you, everyone for your comments on my "Pop" art tryptich.

I agree with Noraneko that putting the right photo in the center and the two extreme distortions on the outsides would balance the work from an emotional standpoint, but I think the current order is balanced from a color standpoint. So there is a dilemma, and I guess I'll leave it as is. But thank you for the suggestion, Catherine, I gave it a lot of thought. I do understand your point, and think it is quite valid.

JuliBoc the most important thing is that you are happy with your work, and I find it both interesting and well-executed. I look forward to seeing your triptych entry!

Ideas for Triptychs

Unity: a man with one child, a bicycle with one wheel, a horse with one leg.
Light: the sunset reflected in blood, peonies, a man burning.
Time: a robin's egg, an engorged tick, a petal on the ground.
Joy: shimmering broken glass, a fly half buried in sugar, the shadow of a man bent over laughing
Gratitude: two hands shaking, two hips shaking, a Shaker sitting in a chair she made
Strength: an ant carrying a pea, a crushed pea, a knife covered with peanut butter
Love: bare feet facing a pair of shoes, a deep-fried boot, a tangle of laces
War: dead worms on the sidewalk, a toothy smile, a baby in a tuba.
