My goal of 6 with this one seems to be a little far fetched at this moment..but I am happy that I am getting so many comments(varying from "love it" to "What did you think when you entered this?")

man... looking through the entries... there are a lot that are not
"Honor(ing) the rule of thirds"

How hard do you guys take off for that? Personally, I feel like if the (obviously) main subject is clearly centered- then it fails the challenge and you're not getting higher than a 5.

I hate being so stern, especially when there are so many. :(

But I would look closely! There are some entries that may have centered objects but that have significant leading lines that clearly fit the rule of thirds

Yeah- I'm being super careful, that's why i said the obviously main subject being clearly in the center. Otherwise my entry would score pretty low too :)

which it is anyways- 5.5

I'm the same. Before I mark it for anything I mark it for challenge fit. If someone submits a stunning portrait for a landscape challenge, they can't get more than a four.

In a challenge like this though you'd be hard pressed to not fit the rule of thirds a bit so the voting is less harsh.

I'm remembering why I don't usually follow these score threads. My 5.6 seems like such a crap score. It sucks being so average.

AND 1 of the comments is a larus comment (good too with a suggestion)! The score is about what I was expecting.

I received a PM, sort of defending some of the 'centered' shots.

The thing about a challenge like this- is that DPC is for you to learn. If you do not understand the challenge (or the rule of thirds) you look it up, you clearly have internet access, even wikipedia has an article on it.

The idea behind the rule of thirds is that the important elements of the composition are placed where these lines intersect, or even along the lines. Just because you have SOMETHING on the point does not mean you have followed the 'rule'.

I'm not saying you should always do this, it's a guideline. But for this challenge- yes, this is exactly what you should do.

I also voted pretty sternly on the ROT thing... Given that that's what the challenge is, the image should (to my mind) be a very strong ROT composition.

So ideally, an obvious focus to the image, placed on or near one of the ROT points; and a background that did not confuse the eye.

I was forgiving of sloppyness as to the precise location of the 1/3 points, if the photo was otherwise good.

I was not forgiving if the title of the photo was designed to tell me what was on the 1/3 point.

This seems like such an open challenge that there's no real reason not to meet it. I gave 2 tens for what I think are two of the best images I've seen in my (admittedly short) tenure here.

Wow. In 2 votes I just dropped from a 6.3 to 6.1. Somebody takes great offence to my photography. :(

Was it from me? If so, it's a great shot! If not, it's probably still a great shot!

I have been blessed by the ROT police too..I hope they took a moment before deciding that it does not meet ROT.
My photo did not meet the perception of ROT of lots of voters, but I won't complain..I took the risk.

Its at 5.78.

I'm still new to most of this here, only entered a few challenges, not doing so great so far.

How do you find out what scores you've been given (like a breakdown of individual scores)?

So far, I've got -
Votes 50
Views 72
Avg. Vote 5.3000

This is actually my best entry so far, so....

You have to do it by hand - by using the number of votes, the average score and do the math. There is an excel spreadsheet floating around that you can use to automate it a little - but it is not a part of the DPC site itself as an option

For me barely over 5.00 is actually okay. I don't
have high score expectations here. I know that the voters
here at DPC are strict. They don't give away eights or above unless
it's truly great. Or at least very very good.

I think the voters a so overwhelmed by my photo, they just cant put into words how wonderful it is, and just are in awe and freeze...unable to comment because of their trembling fingers.

Yeah, yeah thats it.

How is it that folks will take the time to look at a photo, but not give their opinion via voting?

I made sure that I voted on 100% of all entries. Took me three hours to go through all of the photos and give each one enough time for consideration, but I still voted on every photo at which I looked....
