Greetmir, I'm one of those you're throwing the book at, but I'm good with it. Did it on purpose. :-)

I am not throwing the book at anyone. I just cannot believe some of the interpretations of The Rule Of Thirds. Making an image that is SO NOT anything to do with The Rule Of Thirds is not statement enough about The Rule Of Thirds to get a good score from me.

That would be like entering a totally YELLOW photo in a BLUE Challenge and calling NOT BLUE. By that criteria ANY photo could be shoehorned into ANY challenge.

It was suggested by Judi that when I submit a photo for a Challenge that I consider the voters my client if I want good scores. I like that angle of it and do that now.

I am not beyond giving someone good scores for an OOB photo, mind you.

getting very close to becoming my personal worst so far; fair enough, I expected it, but I'd be happier if I get just *one* comment that indicates they understood what I was going for. Not that the "don't get it"-type comments aren't helpful, just that the occasional sympatico one would help boost my morale. LOL :)

Commenters don't seem to like my picture much, but the score is well above my average.

Just occurred to me it'd be kinda fun to submit a 5 photo tryptich and call it 'A trilogy in five parts' :) Shame it would be a DQ as well as getting hundreds of dnmc votes. At least it would appeal to the Douglas Adams fans out there...

I'm so glad Svetlana won the blue with that astounding image. Not that the other winners aren't good, but in my book, hers is in a different league. I gasped when I opened it I was so floored. What an artist!!!

Just for fun, here's part of the Wikipedia bit on Rule of Thirds:

"The application of the rule of thirds to photographs is considered by many to make them more aesthetically pleasing and professional-looking. The rule of thirds can be applied by lining up subjects with the guiding lines, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line instead of the center, or allowing linear features in the photograph to flow from section to section. In addition, many photographers recommend treating any "rule" of composition as more of a guideline, since pleasing photographs can often be made while ignoring one or more such rules."

Not saying I ignored the rule - in fact, I didn't. But I did not position a single subject on a crosshair, which is what I think the vast majority of the viewing audience assumes is required for rule of thirds. Note the bits about aligning horizons and allowing features to flow from one section to another. Just saying there's more than one way to interpret the rule. :-)

Hehe, you've been building it up all week. Can't wait to actually see this marvel of OOB rule interpretation :)

Yeah well I agree but a single subject centered or stuck in the corner or along the edge with a basically featureless background got like 4s from me.

Oh, but you do realize that I am most likely completely and utterly wrong. And I have the score to prove it! :-)

Yes, "gasp" is way beyond "wow", and totally applies in this case.

I wanted to say hi to everyone. My internet is on the fritz so I have no access at home. I am at work now and taking one of my 15 min breaks.

I didn't realize how much DPC has become a part of my life until I couldn't access it. I love you guys and really miss being here and reading all you have to say.

I did get a chance to look real quick at the challenge results and you all did a great job!! I am hoping to score the current challenges at lunch tomorrow. I'm bummed that I couldn't get anything entered, but I know that I will enjoy all of your captures so much!

I'm in bubbles this time, not rule of thirds. But here's my OOB entry from the last one. Each eye is on one of the thirds lines, but not in a typical arrangement - the two eyes toward the left and right edges are on horizontal thirds lines and the other two eyes are on vertical thirds lines. Two intersections are more or less in the middle of the girls' foreheads.

OYNC (OOBIE-YAPPIE Notification Committee) is exquisitely elated to announce this week's OOBIEs and YAPPIEs (yep, we had twins in each!).

Thanks, as always, to quiet_observation for her tallying talents.
