Does anyone have any useful advice on this:

My camera's autofocus seems to be very hit and miss - I find it hard to get it to focus on what I want it to focus on. To the extent that I have to either take hundreds of photos (literally) to get things just right, or do stupid amounts of sharpening in post-processing, which then leave traces. Is there something I can do about this? Or is it a problem everyone with non-manual focusing experiences?

Is it certain situations? Low light, moving object, handheld, close to a subject?

Try an experiment-take a photograph in a well light situation of a stationary object while the camera is on a tripod.

It tends to be when the subject is close-ish, but not close enough to use the macro setting, and there's stuff in the background. Also in low light, when there's a couple of different shapes present. Oh, it does have 3 different auto focus settings - 'center', 'multi' and 'continuous', but I just tend to leave it on 'center' because I'm not sure what the other two mean...

My 3rds is sitting at about a 5.4, but that with less than 20 votes - we'll see how long it holds.

No word from the bank yet, but we're expecting to be turned down (due to poor credit history)

From the manual: Center AF means that whatever is in the center of the frame is the most in focus. Multi is a setting for high contrast subjects (light subject against dark background or dark subject against light background) but again the center of the frame is what is most in focus. Continuous would be for moving objects like your light trails. The camera also has an AF/AE lock if you want offcenter subjects to be in focus.

Ooh, thanks, I'll have to try continuous focus the next time I take fire pictures... I suppose I could do a bunch of tester shots with all 3 settings and see what works best.

I just passed the 1/2 way mark scoring the Rule of Thirds Challenge ... I had to take a break.

It seems to me that a LOT of people thinks that Rule of Thirds means something along the lines of ...
