my 2 cents worth!

i have 2 issues with what's going on here.

first, If someone deliberately cheats twice in challenges, they get a 1 week suspension. Someone else favors their wife's photos, they get a 12 week suspension. This doesn't seem to be punishment fitting the crime.

second, again, if someone cheats in their submissions, they are banned from submitting. I don't think they are banned from voting.
If someone is guilty of vote fixing, can't they be banned from voting while still being allowed to submit.

I've been reading this thread closely - hadn't posted as I've chatted to Marac off the board - but I have to say I am extremely surprised by the scale of the punishment.

A VERY GOOD POINT ... maybe you should bring it up with the sc .... dont know why it wasnt brought up before ... or has it??

I believe the rules are also to stop people making dummy accounts in order top fix voting. Allowing them to continue submitting would still allow this kind of fixing to continue.

Its not just the giving its also the recieving of high votes... however I DO think that this would be a great idea.. Issue a hard warning accompanied by a voting ban for 3 months I also think that the person (including me of cause) should have to make a certain ammount of USEFUL comments to challenge entries too so they don't just slouch off and not vote..

A voting ban for 3 months and 50+ 100+ USEFULL comments, (not just 'nice' or 1 word comments) also that person should not be allowed to be a baghead.... hehehe

Maybe change their icon to a little prisoner or something LOL... so that the photographer knows the comment is from a banned person and can decide if the comment was actually helpful or not.. I always mark comments helpful even the ones that say "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE!"

Might be worth thinking about for a future term of punishment

and dummy accounts ..... like wot can you do?? ... i reckon if ppl are going to do that .... well they're TOTAL LOSERS ... and wotever ...
and since all this started yesterday, well for me anyway ... i started wondering how this'd all go if we won money or something ... it really is very very very sad that ppl would go to such lengths, like creating a dummy account to improve their score ... all i can say is ..... SHAME!!!!!!!!! ..
and you shameful losers out there ... YOU TOTALLY SUCK ..... and get a life!!!!!!!!
sorry .. i'm not usually so forceful, but i love this site and hate for it to be abused .......

To be honest I think not being able to submit is a good punishment but I doubt there's really any need to prevent voting. Voting stil contributes greatly to the site and will, like you say, give you an opportunity to make up and stay active. I mean, it's not like someone would continue messing with the votes whilst they know full well they're being watched by the SC.

Voting stil contributes greatly to the site...

You are right, but if people abuse their votes... take it away!

And i'm still not convinced that deliberately cheating twice in challenges is twelve times worse than being biassed towards your wife's pictures.

How about changing it to a rat or pig? As in "Cheating Rat" or "Lying Pig".

Or even a little thumbnail of Ted Bundy as you are on the same level.

Would be far more suitable.

:-)

Ditto. That has to rank as the single most inappropriately sized signature I have EVER seen here on DPC.

They're talking about the zillion images that appear after every single post you make. You should put those on your profile page instead of in your forum signature. Very long signatures are really annoying. :/

are you saying that all the pics i have on my profile page are coming out when i do a post??? .. like i cant see them myself ... can i go to my preferences and stop that happening ??

Go to My Preferences and click "show forum signatures" then you'll see what we see. You can also fix that on your My Preferences page in the Forums Signature section.

What happened to democracy, if I like my wife̢۪s photo, and vote it high what is wrong, this is a free vote, or is it, where did the votes come from on the self portrait challenges, how many of you will admit to voting on the people they recognized, and except a ban for it, I have voted on every photo in every challenge over the last 4 months, and just at the moment, don̢۪t feel like I want to bother any more, it̢۪s not a fair vote, if you can̢۪t vote for what you like, that is the whole point, if I̢۪m not free to vote how I see fit, then I just don̢۪t want to vote.

I've read the many comments. I feel the need to clarify and give more information about the length of MAK's ban, as the SC doesn't just blast someone with 3 months without some kind of history.

MAK takes his photography seriously. He has worked hard to develop a style that works for him and pleases others. In the past, he has gone overboard and crossed the line in his enthusiasm to make the entry. The SC took notice of the problems and addressed them in keeping with the site rules.

I will miss seeing MAK's entries for the next few months. I will also remember that with my knowledge of the background, I feel the SC has been more than fair in dealing with this "crossing of the line."

There were a range of punishments given, from a simple warning to a suspension from voting to, at the max, a 3 month suspension from voting and submitting. The vast majority fell within a one month suspension from either voting or both voting and submitting. There were many factors taken into account in our assessments and resulting punishments awarded accordingly.

You can vote for what you like. However, you should do so according to the photo, not the photographer. You're not doing that if you give someone a 10 for every photo they submit.

'k. Fair enough. On the surface the penalties seem harsh BUT I do have faith in the SC and I know you don't make judgements lightly so I'm definitely not complaining!

exactly, I vote on the photo, so why have I received a ban, I only no one person on this site, and recently gave that person a 2, if that is friend voting, forget it, that is not a free vote.
