So if you don't tell anybody you're doing something illegal, then it's OK? Nice try, but it doesn't work that way. None of the people nabbed in this sweep stated their intention to influence a friend's score, and yet they were still caught.
|
I didn't say that. Someone else did.

Shannon, when quoting, it's generally best to avoid quoting someone who agrees with you in a way that makes him appear to be disagreeing with you. :P

No, I didn't WAIT to get caught. Again, that's the difference.
Originally posted by Art Roflmao: Originally posted by yakatme: I couldn't care less about your so called honesty now that you've finally been caught....Now, this is where honesty comes in. Not after you've been caught. |
I'm curious, did you SELF-DQ for the spot editing or did you get caught? |
You just provided the link to my DQ'd image. Didn't you pause long enough to read the details in the 'Photographer's Comments'???
I clearly listed the details of my editing which included dodging and burning which obviously indicates a true mistake, not an intentional attempt to disregard the rules for a higher score. If I was attempting to get away with it, I wouldn't have announced my dodging and burning.
Here's a summary of what happened...
I forgot that my entry was for a basic editing challenge instead of advanced editing. A couple of days before the voting ended I noticed that it was advanced editing. I wondered if I had taken that into consideration when I edited it. I remembered that I had entered my editing steps in the Photographer's Comments because I was hoping for a critique from the critique club. At the time I didn't know how to view the photographer's details before the end of voting. So I checked those details immediately after rollover and saw that I had listed dodging and burning as part of my editing. Right away, I PM'd Scalvert to let him know of my mistake and asked him to disqualify my entry immediately. I had made a mistake and I wanted it rectified as soon as possible.
I DIDN'T WAIT TO GET CAUGHT AND THAT'S A BIG DIFFERENCE!____ PERIOD!
edited for clarification of the facts

You can try to rationalize it all you want, but it's against the rules to intentionally boost your wife's score no matter how you do it. |
My point being, if I hadn't stated my illegal intentions I did nothing wrong. |
Wrong - if you hadn't stated your illegal intentions, you wouldn't be caught. Just because you're not caught doesn't make an action right.

Um, no. I looked for an indication in the DQ notes of a self DQ. If I had read the notes and saw that you did actually self DQ because you realized you made a mistake, I would have kept my mouth shut because there would be is not any hippocracy to hurl at you. :) So I apologize for my hasty ignorance.
Originally posted by yakatme: I DIDN'T WAIT TO GET CAUGHT AND THAT'S A BIG DIFFERENCE! |
I can agree with that statement in general, but it doesn't mean that when someone is caught and is apologetic, remorseful, regretful, etc. that they shouldn't be believed. Granted, the severity of the offense is a big factor, IMO.
Originally posted by yakatme: PERIOD! |
That's actually an exclamation point. ;-)
I think I am done with this issue. ...then again, since Leroy's back, I'll just sit back, eat some popcorn and try to keep my mouth shut.

I know that you said that you were done, but I just checked and found that I was the first to comment on my entry AFTER the challenge. This comment includes my apology for my mistake.
This comment was made at 12:48 a.m., which is about 30 minutes after the site comes back up after rollover. I don't think DQ's happen that fast unless they are self DQ's.
Hopefully this clears up any questions you might have about my DQ and more importatntly to me...any questions you might have about my honesty.
edit for typo

It falls under the category of "Since a few people have to abuse it, nobody can have it." discipline :) I hated the idea in grade school.. I hate the idea now. lol.
It just doesn't make any sense to ban something completely for the abuses of the few. Besides, think of the horrors of *policing* it :) It's not so difficult to police voting patterns when they're abnormal.. but trying to prove that people are sharing photos for critique/suggestions/what-not, and policing that? eek. Especially if said persons then voted in very objective, normal ways.
s'all I'm sayin' bro. |

Frankly, like I said, I didn't dig that deep - I just jumped on an assumption - again, my bad.
moving on. ...or should I say "rolling on"?

Here again, I see, but don't agree - but I also have zero investment in any side of any of these arguments, so I really don't care enough to continue debating *he says for like the 3rd time* :) |

I can't believe i actually just read every post in here! my eyes hurt.
you guys hate me for it i bet but im a moocher, i don't vote alot, i just don't have time, school+work=not alot of dpc voting time.
But say theres a photographer that shoots tulips alot, and say i love tulips. So i vote higher on these tulip photos for my love of tulips(which happen to be all of this one users photos). Is my love for a tulip a bannable offense?
and for the record i don't like tulips at all :-P |

Man, I don't come here much anymore and I remember why.
I think this site would be better off as a critique forum.
People get their undies way too bunched up about an internet ribbon, it's like they actually believe that DPC is the only form of validation on good photography. Don't you take photos because you enjoy it? I hope you don't take them to impress a bunch of user names that for the most part you haven't even met in person.
There is much good photography here to be seen and gather ideas from... but all this arguing ...and a lot of you guys are older than me. Dang.
And if you like a picture of your wives, well then vote high for it.
And if you like your wife and you like a picture but you can't distinguish if you like the picture because your wife made it, who cares. Vote it high. I'm pretty sure that's how voting in real life works. Though DPC is not real life... it seems like some people tend to forget that though.

I don't really understand this. You state right off the bat that you don't come here much anymore, and then proceed to try and invalidate how other people feel about the challenges and the rewards for winning or placing in them... and *then* proceed to tell people to just go ahead and skirt the rules in place because it all doesn't matter.. to *you*.
So.. it doesn't matter to you. That doesn't mean it shouldn't matter to others that place a great deal of time and energy into this site trying to maintain a modicum of integrity. You have all the right in the world to feel the way you do about things here personally, and others do the same.
As for the arguing.. that's life. You can either choose to ignore it, join in for the fun of it, or let it control you. You've chosen to limit taking part. Good for you.
Let other people decide what *they* wish to feel good about and be validated by.

Come on .... don't hurt to say sorry, and it goes a long way too.
Don't worry Mr Yanko, that damn Art guy has been in our village all week with a book of matches.. don't wanna say much just incase he photoshops me, you know what he's like.. |
hi Marac .. real sorry about your ban ...
and hey ... i got suspended as well .... for one month ...
i'd be pretty pissed at anyone who was cheating to win, but i pretty much talked about a couple of entries to a couple of ppl ... cant even really remember which ones .. and i really thought any slightly higher score that i would'v given, because i actually knew them, would make no difference to the ultimate score ... and vice versa ..
and i've gone and checked my average votes, and i've been consistantly giving certain ppl very high votes .. but at the time didnt know it was theirs ... like we'll be drawn to certain images, and vote high, because we like the style ... and of course it makes sense that it might be because we like that persons work ... but wotever ..... and they might feel the same about our work without knowing its ours at the time of voting ...
i've had some really nice conversations with the sc and everything's happy in dpc land!!! ... i totally understand their point of view and i'll never ever talk about one of my challenge entries again as long as i live ..!!!!! and i'm totally happy that i'v been slapped on the wrist along with other ppl who may have been doing the friend voting with more sinister reasons in mind !!!!!!! :) ....
oh .. bye the way ... you are one of the ppl i voted consistently high on ... coz i love your style ... didnt know they were yours at the time of voting tho...
think you should stick around and not take the suspension personally .. its like the bad apple thing ... and if you're weeding you occasionally get a flower by mistake!!!!!!!!! |
