I would just like to apologise to my friends for I was banned for 'frind voting' I voted my wife shots always high and also a couple of my friends too... why?.. because I LIKE their work. It is my vote to do with as I please and I did exactly that.. however i DID NOT give out a batch of 1s 2s and 3s to great shots, they were also given 10s 9s 8s I do NOT troll vote I give good votes to good photographers.
Today I was given a BAN for 3 months. I consider that to be a bit high to be honest with you. but rules are rules so now I have my sentence. unfortunately this ban will take me out of my membership and I will not be renewing (I have a ton of work coming up for that reason ONLY) so I wanted to say to all my buddies and other members SORRY!
but before you crucify me consider these points...
I apologised publically
I did not give out hundreds of high 'friend' votes.... just to my wife and a couple of people who i think ROCK!
I NEVER troll voted anyone
Any shot I liked got a high score regardless
I recognise peoples style and vote FAIR even if i gave out 3 or 4 friend votes
feel free to spank my digital butt....
I wonder how many of us are honest enough to admit publically that they got slapped with a ban. IF you got what it takes to do it, have what it takes to apologise here...

Really sorry to hear that Marac, I'll miss your good work. But the only way to avoid such a sentence is NOT to vote on shots you have already seen outside the challenge. I also like the work of my girlfriend, but I usually don't cast a vote, just because this would give the image an unfair advantage through the additonal information I have about the picture and the longer time I have seen it.

Sorry to hear also. I really enjoyed your work, Marac. Glad you're being reasonable about it.
Just took what might be a last look at your portfolio and thought I'd post this for the irony...
The End of the Road
Good luck to you.

I'll definitely miss your work..
It's quite hard to be unbiased and vote accordingly for people you're close too.. I can understand that.. 'but thou must resist temptation' *Tries to hypnotize*

Marac, you may wish to consider keeping your membership so folks here can still see your portfolio. Without it, all that goes away!

Well..... was I the only one who got a ban then?
That makes me feel rather sad
or are the others too ashamed of themselves to apologise?
Come on .... don't hurt to say sorry, and it goes a long way too.
Don't worry Mr Yanko, that damn Art guy has been in our village all week with a book of matches.. don't wanna say much just incase he photoshops me, you know what he's like.. |

I haven't checked my personal email yet, but I should be banned too. Shame on me for consistently voting high on my wife's photos. God forbid I actually liked her work and thought it deserved a high score!
Thanks for setting me straight DPC! I won't let it happen again.
And I'd like to give a big apology to everyone that may have suffered any from my illegal voting habbits. I know how horrible it feels to see other people score higher then yourself on a internet photo contest that comes with no prize of value other then a little ribbon by your name. I know, I'm a horrible person, I hope you can forgive me.
SC, please go through the archives and remove all my votes and re-calculate scores. Clearly I must have affected the results of numerous challenges badly hurting many people.
I'll leave in shame now because clearly my integrety is far too low to hang out a web site with such high moral values.

An interesting experiment for those who really like their spouces photo and vote high:
Take a couple weeks where you don't look their photos and see what you give them. Do you still vote them as high or do they fall into the mix of other photos?
The more you look at a photo the more you gain an attachment and an understanding. Do you give everyone that same amount of looking time? Do you know why they shot that photo the way they did?
While the photo your spouces took might be a great photo maybe it's not worth the 9 or 10 you gave it. Maybe if you'd never seen the photo before and didn't know it was their's you would have given it a 7 or an 8. The difference is very small, but still unfair to others none-the-less. I've seen challenges that the ribbon winners are that close. |

No offence, but who cares?
Maybe we're taking things a little too seriously? |

Some of us do care, perhaps only on the principle of the thing. The contest is supposed to be fair; pre-knowledge of an entry gives extra influence to that vote in some way, and the people who participate in such actions are suddenly no longer on the level with the rest of us. Is it a tiny difference - sure. But it's still the principle that's violated.
I agree with what has been mentioned before: if you see your spouses/friends/dogs photo in the challenge, pass it by without voting. If it̢۪s really as good as you think it is, that will be recognized, and it will get the score it deserves, without casting anyone in bad light or causing these silly problems.

Righteous indignation is the cloak of a guilty conscience.
Like someone else already said: If your spouse/friend really has that great of a shot, everyone else will know too and the final vote will reflect it without your vote as input. There is a reason that the photographer's name is hidden during voting.

What if everyone on this site had one or two people to which they felt compelled to give consistently high scores. How much might that skew the voting results? Sometimes the difference between the ribbons is just one 10 vote...or the difference between a yellow ribbon and 4th place. It's upsetting that you feel we are grandstanding and declaring our high moral values but one of the cornerstones of this site is its voting integrity and fairness to everyone and we will not apologize for trying to maintaining those ethics.

Well ok, but if i saw my spouse's photo i would have no problem voting on it, because, same goes with every other photo on the site, i'd vote high if i liked it, and low if i didn't.
Why should it be more complicated than that?
Granted some people might just vote high because of who's it is, but like you said it would be an absolutely miniscule difference.

I think you're missing the point. Miniscule differences can make ALL the differnce when it comes to the top 10 places.
And if someone's wife enters a photo that deserves only a 3, or a 6, how likely is it that they'll really vote that on it, and not boost it a little because A) they feel bad voting her that low, or B) they know more about it's history/meaning/effort than the rest of us do.
It shifts the scale to favor some members above others, even if it is, as you said youself, only by a miniscule amount.

I'd rather challenge those who HAVEN'T BEEN CAUGHT YET to be honest and admit to their dishonesty. I couldn't care less about your so called honesty now that you've finally been caught.

I like a lot of my son's shots and he has got what I definitely consider a 10 for his April free study. It is 100% his own because he took the shot while he was on spring break with his mother and I wasn't around to tutor him like I tend to do. He applied what he learned from me and from what he has observed on here on DPC.
But I won't play with fire and vote on his entry. I know that I don't have to refrain from voting on his entry, but after past voting scandals here I don't even want to give the appearance of favortism. It's just one vote that he won't get so it's not that big of a deal not to vote on it.
Now, this is where honesty comes in. Not after you've been caught.
