Dustin, you will one day live long enough to understand that being grown up has nothing to do with age. :)

so is this why i see late 30's- mid 40's women dressed up like Paris Hilton?

Pinhole Photography by Matt Callow

I've followed his work off and on over the last few years, and the pinhole discussion immediately brought him to mind.

I'm in the "love it" camp of course. In Edward Holland's landscape gallery, there's a gorgeous, beautifully foggy photo of a house that dominates the composition... love it. It's not exactly the same thing, but the quirkiness of it is why I love my Holga and can't wait until I have a camera that can use a Lensbaby.

Nah, that's just fear of growing old and not wanting to admit that you're not 24 anymore.

how did you get to shoot with holland?

...actually, i stopped by his booth at an art show, we chatted, another woman joined the conversation and asked about a particular image, he laughed and whipped out his pinhole. i asked if i could try it, and when he said yes, i popped it on my camera and started shooting at people outside his booth...

(the guy in the photo just happens to be a friend of mine who had wandered up.)

I'm trying to understand why you're so happy with the shot, Skip.

it's not that i think my shot is so great (after all, it was just a grab of a friend of mine). it's just a different effect that is achieved in-camera as opposed to in post-processing. it's a shame, but you can't get around how much you lose between seeing something live and large, vs seeing it small over the internet. the stuff i saw of holland's was simply breath-taking.

I'm sorry if it offends his style but it sucks. In my opinion there is no one who would buy such a photo .... but some would just because of the name of the photog. I see nothing of value, expertise or quality. Sorry Skip but stick with your own lenses, he can learn from you ;)

Edit: I see most of his work is much better and is indeed good, this "pin hole" lens needs to go to the dump ;)

i'm glad you like my stuff, but not sure if i follow you here. my image was just an example of an in-camera effect, not of a piece of saleable art. his stuff is simply incredible...many of those landscapes are sold as 6 ft wide triptichs!

pinhole is something you either love or hate.

Put me in the "can't stand it" camp. I suppose it's like "fine art" ... I just don't get it.

i probably felt the same until i found myself looking at a few of his large prints, wondering how they came to be. when he gave me the opportunity to find out, my mind was opened to wanting to try something new ;-)

Great answers, Skip! Keep showing us cool new stuff. Not everyone will like it, which is just dandy. But if we're never exposed to stuff, we'll never have the chance to discover new things we DO like. :)
