Can I ask a question...what is the diff in rolled canvas and mounted?

04/17/2007 09:19:53 PM · #6
Rolled I suspect you have to stretch yourself whereas mounted they've already done that for you.

Would mounted be to thick for a frame?

I just did a quick look through the smugmug site and the mounted canvas may be the gallery wrapped canvas which doesn't require a frame. I don't know for sure.

Mounted look really cool without frames imo :)

I think that is the whole point isn't it? Would you ever frame a mounted canvas?

Yeah, uhm, classical artists have been framing mounted canvases since the begining of paint... a lot of traditionalists still do. I for one also like the more modern look of then unframed and hung stark / gallery style.

Oh, I thought you would just place a rolled canvas behind the frame instead of a mounted canvas.

The rolled canvas still has to be mounted on a stretcher frame before framing it.

But with Gallery Wrap you have to print the image larger to accommodate wrapping the image around the frame. Versus regular framing where you only have to get the edge of the image just slightly over the edge of the stretcher frame. (it's all the same thing, it's just whether you expect to be able to see the sides of the frames when all is said and done)

How do SmugMug's prices compare to others in the US?
Edit: Concerning their Canvas Prints not other services

By comparison, here are Smugmug's mounted canvas prices compared to mpix gallery wraps:

Smugmug Mounted Canvas:
11 x 14 = $59.95
16 x 20 = $89.95
20 x 30 = $129.95

Mpix Gallery Wrap:
11 x 14 = $70
16 x 20 = $90
20 x 30 = $130

These are the only sizes they had in common. And of these, only the 11x14 is different.

One problem with mail-order gallery wraps is shipping. It tends to be expensive mailing a 16x20" mounted canvas print through the mail.

So another comparison is this, using a local lab's prices (Nichol's Photo Lab):

Gallery Wrap:
11 x 14 = $56.30 vs smugmg $59.95
16 x 20 = $98.30 vs smugmug $89.95
20 x 30 = $176.70 vs smugmug $129.95

So for the smaller sizes, it's probably cheaper to have it printed locally and avoid the shipping charge. But wow... look at that 20x30" price? It may be cheaper to order from smugmug for the 20x30" print.

Last night I couldn't get into simplycanvas.com, but I can now. So here's another comparison:

Stretched:
11 x 14 = $54 vs smugmg $59.95
16 x 20 = $79 vs smugmug $89.95
20 x 30 = $124 vs smugmug $129.95

Unstretched:
11 x 14 = $20 vs smugmg $24.95
16 x 20 = $42 vs smugmug $49.95
20 x 30 = $78 vs smugmug $79.95

So the prices see "comparable". One really nice thing about simplycanvas is that you can order just about any size you want. Besides the standard sizes (and they have far more standard sizes than any place I've seen), they also include a calculator on their website for pricing ANY size you want.

Okay, forgive me if this is a lame but.... :)

Is there a difference between "mounted canvas" (smugmug) and "gallery wrap" (Mpix) and if so, what is is?

They want so much information, to register even a tax ID# other than that I cant do much on their website to see print sizes or the calculator that you mentioned, so I did not register. The thing I wanna check out on them is the any size feature that sounds awesome for my panoramas.

I also found this place
