I'm not saying the fluke 6 should go. Please don't get me wrong. What I'm saying is that the people who start scoring over 6 on a regular basis and feel it's no longer fun when they don't really aren't in the TS state of mind anymore. They are more in the 'oh yay, let's win a ribbon' state of mind. Oh nevermind. Maybe when I wake up a bit more I can come back and be more articulate about this. |

Christian, your images are often too subtle to be appreciated by DPC. The more I have seen your work and viewed the results, the more I can see your artistic training and the more respect I gain for you as an artist. Many of your pieces belong in large format hanging in a gallery. |

My earlier post was tongue-in-cheek, but we do need to try to make sure we don't just become an extension of scores threads. The neat thing about Team Suck is it's more than just DPC challenges and scores. Does this make sense? |

Well said, Deb. The nice thing about Team Suck is that I've always felt it is okay to pull off a 6.5+ but then bomb with a 4.xxx. It is a lot easier to try risky shots here than it would be as part of a WPL member. It is also about a lot more than scoring for me- I've learned a tremendous amount from other TS members, and and nice side-effect is that my scores overall have greatly improved because of it.
Perhaps the nicest thing about this place is that you are almost guaranteed a lot of comments from other members if you take the time to comment. And underrated shots get appreciated. |

Yes.
Personally I don't see why people who are consistently scoring > 6 would want to be in a suck league. Sure, we're all going to have off days and fluke a good score, but if you're performing well all the time, and getting to the point where it actually upsets you if you don't get a 6, I'd say that's the time to consider moving on.
I've ranted a bit about this before. I saw this thread as a place where people were at a level of "averageness". So it's a team of rough equals, where there can be some comparison and peer-help.
If it just becomes another one of those threads where people moan because they "only" have 5.9 then someone (probably me) will have to pack up and move on.
Maybe I am a voice of discord, but it is difficult to be all things to all people. I'm not sure you can support continual improvement to the level of routine top-20 placings whilst still being a happy place for average joe. |

OK, let me try to answer this in the best way I can, honestly and straight forward. This could be a bit long winded. We started out as a team of people who usually score average or sub average. We've all agreed it's mainly because of the way we see things, not because we have no talent. It's our "scores" that suck, not us! Suddenly, we seem to have people who's scores no longer suck. That's a good thing for those people. I applaud them. They have found the DPC secret for scoring well. It doesn't mean I like them any less. I just feel they are no longer in my league. They have reached the elusive elite. Like I said before, I'm not talking about the fluke +6. I'm not even saying once you reach so many >6's you should leave. What I'm talking about is the attitude. When it becomes so important that you reach that +6, you are no longer about being there for your team, you are too worried about your score! I could care less about beating the DPC ribbon gods. If it ever happened, even once, it would be a fluke. If I could do it on a regular basis, I certainly wouldn't feel like I suck. People generally start out nice on this site (and again, please don't anyone take this the wrong way!) but, as they get better, they seem to think they are better than others in other ways as well. It shows in who responds to your questions and how, etc. Go take a peek at the landscape score thread. Just read page 1 and look at the comments ribbon winners make about the way they are scoring the challenge. I think it sums it up what happens to people as they improve. I definitely don't want to kick anyone unwillingly out of TS. I just feel that when you've improved to the point where your scores matter, you should think about moving on. For some of us that will be never, for some it will just be a matter of months.
Now, I'm getting off my soapbox and will shut up. I'm not looking to hurt anyone's feelings. I just feel my own get stomped on a bit much here lately. (Not in this thread, but on the site in general.) |

Simplistically because consistently being placed in the top ranks generates a different mindset to not being in that set. You can see how it affects people. There is a quantum shift between "yaay, I got a 5" and "geez I can't believe I'm only scoring a 5.9 this time". |

I like Raish's smiley collection. :-)
And I hereby promise that most of the time I shall go ahead and enter what I like, not what I think DPC likes. I, too, get caught up in that "why the heck can't I get above a x.xx?" mentality and it pisses me off when I do that. (Slaps self upside the head.)
For the record, in Chains, I entered what I thought was the more appropriate DPC entry - I liked my outtake better. (Mom, however, actually liked the DPCish one best, and you gotta weigh mom's opinion in the equation, you know...).
For bicycles, it really was a toss-up. I like both the shot I entered (which I deemed a bit more DPC-friendly) and my preferred outtake. Could have gone either way, though I do think the outtake is a better picture overall. It did come down to not wanting to see my preferred shot get crucified, though.
I have a couple of options for the Free Study, one of which is a picture that would pretty much qualify for not just basic, but minimal editing. I like it alot. Haven't run it past mom yet, though. But I promise that whatever I enter will be something *I* like and not just something I think DPC may like.
And I still think Team Suck is the coolest place to hang on DPC. :-) |

i've just spent the last little while looking through portfolios. yes, some of us are starting to get high scores. wahey for them, i say! but, it seems that most of the shots are still what one might term 'team suck' images. that has never been equated with 'poor quality', just not your average dpc shiny image.
could it be that, due to our growing presence in the land of dpc, more people are becoming aware of alternative modes of expressing oneself photographically? more willing to look deeper and longer at an image, and reward it thus?
surely it is possible to create both art and high scoring images. and should we penalise those of us who do manage to succeed on both fronts by withdrawing our support?
i find there to be very little score whinging here, but, it's only human to want to do better. can't we just let all of us have those moments of human weakness when the lure of the shiny is too strong?

I wish you all a very beautiful day!
*off to listen to Jeffrey's interview*
hmmm:) I've just thought my post doesn't really help the discussion about the team suck scores...
but I don't care about scores.
even though I don't post here often enough it is just great to read the discussions here. really. just a great place to come to. thank you :)

We might want to have two separate Team Suck threads on the DPC site - one for score posts and one for other things. |

This is an excellent point; not all good-scoring images are due to the photographer "buying in" to an accepted DPC style. Sometimes OOF, OOB, etc. is rewarded. |

Hey everyone. Just got back from the UK, what a wonderful (though slightly expensive) place. I have a ton of photos, one in the landscape challenge which is a big flunky right now (under 5 at the moment).
Terrific place, weather was spot on, but I am glad to be back. Time to go comment on some photos.
Cheers. |

You know, I think Team Suck does a lot for DPC in general - have you noticed how many folks who get Yappies and OOBIEs immediately stick that graphic in their profiles? I think that's a very cool, very wonderful thing. So I REALLY like the idea Christian has put forth here - that maybe, just maybe, by us putting an emphasis on or at least recognizing the other than tried and true stuff, we could persuade one or two folks to linger a little longer on a shot now and then. What a great contribution that would be. |
