I am OVER IT ALL, I'm over DPC and it's voters, I am sick of constantly being downrated for a good shot worth 6+, I am sick of the people who constantly are winning ribbons, coincidence? I THINK NOT.
It is becoming more and more clear to me the past year that YOU have to BE someone or KNOW someone to do well in this place, yes there are the few odd ribboners but not as many as the people who keep on ribboning.
I AM F*&^%$ over it ALL, all the BS, DQ's for no real reason, you want
us to use our camera more so yeah we do.. What do we get for it WE GET PUNISHED by some stupid SC law oh you can't do in camera editting WELL WTF are we meant to do.
There are people cheating out there doing advanced editting in basic and getting away with it... WHY? because they are popular! this site has become a popularity contest its not a photography contest..
RANT OFF
Damn that felt good
Go on SC lock this thread DOOOOOO IIITTTTTT *Rude gesture's and walks off*

the favouritism (if it's true) by voters is not something the SC could do anything about. |

True. You need to conform and take pictures of the same thing over and over again. And make it all pretty, of course.
I've never won a ribbon or even placed in the top 10. And I was getting frustrated about that. But since the beginning of the year, I've made close to $1500 doing some portraits and architecture shots. I'll take that over a ribbon any day.
And Amy, I understand what you're saying. I can't buy a 6 score nowadays. |

Well, yep, that's a rant all right - it's in the right place. :) I feel a bit like this at the start of every voting round, I think.
Yes, DPC definitely has a certain taste, and some excellent photographers don't fit the DPC mould. That doesn't mean you aren't a good photographer. Maybe it means you don't have mass-market appeal, but again, that doesn't mean you aren't a good photographer. Maybe it means DPC is not for you, but that's your decision to make. Oh, and it doesn't mean you're not a good photographer. :)
The entries are all anonymous, so I don't think it's rigged, but certainly I wonder what the voters are thinking sometimes, when some very ordinary photos score well, and some really great photos are pushed down. There's definitely some great photographers here, who have really ticked on to what creates a ribbon entry, and somehow managed to milk it with ribbon after ribbon. I have no problem with that, but it's frustrating to have my shots consistently bomb out, even when I know that I'm not really that good. :)
The cheating is hard - it's impossible for SC to check every entry. I would think there are a lot of DQable photos getting through simply because nobody knows to report them. At the same time, SC have to enforce the rules the only way they can, and some good entries get DQ just because the entry can't be validated. It's a tough thankless job, and I don't envy the SCs position.

are you upset because someone with a name very similar to yours took the brown ribbon in the night shot challenge?
I'm only kidding of course :-)

DQs for no real reason?
Well, since you brought it up...
5 hours after the insect challenge you said you had a good shot and thank god for in-camera editing!
You were then told that in-camera editing was not allowed in minimal challenges, and you changed your story to "oh, I just changed the settings before I took the shot, how dumb do you think I am?"
You leave the shot in and don't bother to re-shoot, despite having a whole week to retake the shot legally!
We then find your entry has been edited post-shot and DQ you for breaking the very specific rules, which you were clearly aware of.
This shows intentional cheating on your part and you're lucky the punishment you received wasn't worse.
And THEN you have the cheek to start this thread and post slanderous remarks on your profile.
This is the second time this week someone has pretty much lied to get attention and make people feel sorry for them, and hate the SC, over THEIR OWN MISTAKE. Yours wasn't even a mistake. You cheated. On purpose. And its not often I can say that about DQs, and I'd never say it in the forums, but you've pushed me over the line this time.
If people keep making stupid posts like yours then sooner or later the rest of the SC is going to get just as pissed off as I am and quite frankly find any excuse we can to ban people like you. Contrary to popular (well, your) opinion, we are currently very fair, so whatever. What good do your moaning and totally unjustified accusations do for the site? Nothing. What makes me even angrier is that people side with you because you're portraying yourself as some kind of victim - what a joke!

I'm thinking there should be a rule about disparaging the SC in the public forums. If it is allowed to continue, we will likely lose more and gain less exceptional people who volunteer for getting beat up. The makeup of the SC always seemed to me to be diverse enough that there is always a good balance of opinions and judgements. I'd like to believe everyone should assume the SC always has the best intentions - they were chosen based on demonstrated qualities of fairness, tolerance, tact and diplomacy.
I have an idea that will likely go nowhere, but thought it could help with DQ conflicts when they arise. How about you give the person who was DQ'd the option to appeal to a member group. There would be 3 or 5 members randomly chosen from a pool of pre-approved volunteers - (a jury of sorts). There would be a private forum where ALL participants are anonymous and the SC would simply submit their initial findings and the DQ defendant could plead their case. The discussion has a preset time and a time limit and the jury makes a decision and it is final. This should be a last resort, so there should be a penalty if the defendant chooses this and fails to overturn the DQ - like a one week suspension or something.
I know that wouldn't help in this situation, assuming everything Konador said is true (which I do), but it might help in other "gray-area" rules related DQs.
Like many folks though, I would prefer the first alternative which is to accept responsibility for mistakes (unintentional or otherwise) and assume the SC has the best intentions and is not out to get you (that seems irrationally paranoid anyway) and realize this is all for fun and ask yourself if it is worth throwing away all the good reasons you found to hang out here because of one or two perceived bad ones. |

I sort of agree (with the disparaging the SC part). I'm relatively new and I think newbies should be allowed to find their disillusionment themselves. |

Wow - so much anger. Like I've said before, it's just a challenge and not a paying gig. Sometimes I get pissed, but I figure it's not that big a deal in the scheme of things. Like my dad used to say "10 years from now, you'll never know the difference." Put things into perspective. ;~D

Given how the voting works, entries are by definition rated exactly what they're worth. Whether you or I think a shot deserves a 6+ isn't as relevant as what several hundred DPCers collectively think, and complaining to those same people isn't likely to help. I've been frustrated with scores too, but I usually understand what went wrong and try to learn from those comments and self-critiques.

6/9 of the ribbons on the home page were the first or second for those photographers. Larus, Kiwiness, Librodo and I have all had recent <6 scores (and each of us has been DQ'd at least once). Please let me know who we have to be or know to score over 6 because it would save me a lot of hard work.

Um... follow the rules? The whole point of Minimal is NOT to edit your photo! Given that you clearly knew it was illegal, you should be grateful the punishment wasn't worse for intentional cheating.
Originally posted by xXxscarletxXx: There are people cheating out there doing advanced editting in basic and getting away with it... WHY? |
Because we're not aware of it. If you know of someone cheating with Advanced Editing in Basic (like your last DQ), do let us know so we can check it out.

Wow. Could we be any more immature here?
Scalvert, Konador, and the rest of the SC, bravo for defending yourselves here, although it's shameful that you should have have to. It is embarassing the amount of grief some people try to foist off on you.

I whole-heartedly agree with Art, on the SC being made up of upstanding persons who work hard to be fair and judicious. We are all human and, even if a mistake WERE made, we must realize that our SC are volunteers who handle most of the work behind the scenes, and receive nothing for their efforts but the occasional 'thank you'.
Amy, maybe it isn't my place to say this, but I really wish there were something we could do... When I first noticed your work (well over a year ago), you seemed much happier & more friendly. Yet, now I see your posts in the threads and can't help but wonder why you seem so bitter, or angry. Regardless of the reason, I hope that you can find ways to enjoy your talents (and life!) more than you seem to these days.
I also hope you have the courage to admit that you MIGHT have been wrong - your talents are immense, I enjoy your efforts, and I'd hate to see you leave DPC... |

xXxscarletxXx you have to realize that your style of photography is not the norm. That doesn't mean it's not good. Your photos look overprocessed to a typical viewer that doesn't understand that it's your style. I can pick your photos out of most challenges, and you're one of thew few I can do that with.
With your shooting style I can't even imagine that you'd try to enter a regular ol' minimal editing challenge. I can see possibly entering if you're trying new funky things with your new camera. Actually when I read in the other thread that you were in on this challenge I said to myself.. "this should be interesting." I know how much you love your new camera (thanks to every thread about a d80 having you post that it's the bestestest camera ever made!). I was hoping you learned a really cool trick or something that turned out well and still represented your style.
Sadly that wasn't the case. You felt the need to submit an edited photo even after you were told it wasn't legal. And now this.
I've always appreciated your personal style not always liking it, but appreciated it non-the-less. Your immaturity though has always turned me off. I think if you stopped to think about it, you would realize that the childish games aren't going to get you anywhere. Realize you have a talent and focus on that. You'll get a lot more interest in your photography if you're not acting like a spoiled brat.
If this venue isn't providing you what you need to grow any longer then move on, but don't bring others down because you're frustrated. All that does is hurt the entire community.

You are an ANGRY young woman, Amy. Please take some time to really reflect why that is. Also, you're free to leave; we can help. Threats of this nature are simply to draw attention to yourself, so ask yourself "Why am I seeking negative attention?"
Lastly, you may wish to eat more fibre. |
