Hi all...I have a question that only the infinite DPC wisdom can help me on :)
I have a real estate client who wants a P&S camera for jobs that he doesn't need to a professional for.
This camera would be used only for real estate, so it needs to be as wide-angle as possible, with as little distortion as possible (but by no means perfect).
I'm not too familiar with current P&S's on the market. Does anyone have a suggestion of a camera that might suit his needs that's relatively inexpensive (<$300)?

You can buy a wide angle lens attachment for a Nikon Coolpix 5400. It works really nicely for me. The trick is finding a 5400, though, since it's several generations old now. But I think they also have the lens attachments for other Coolpix models if you look. The kits are usually about $100 on eBay.

That is a good point. They make wide angle attachments for many P&S cameras. My older Coolpix 5700 had a whole list of them although the Nikon models were kind of expensive. |

I bought the Nikon WC-E68 to use with my Canon S1 and it's great. It brings it down from a 36 to a 24.48
Now sit down and get ready for the cost: it set me back $25. (Mine was from Cameta, about $20 + shipping)
Hard to believe, it's a beautiful piece of glass. The Nikon wide angle attachments appear to be being dumped.
What you need:
- A filter attachment accessory for the camera (I use the lensmate for the S1)
- A step down ring from the filter size to 46mm (that's the size of the WC-E68)
Add a camera that's good at low light, and you have a powerful combination. I think the Fuji F30 might be a good choice, except you need to find a good lens attachment accessory for it. The only one's I've seen are those that fit in the tripod socket and are more like a ring than a sealed tube. A sealed tube would be better, so as not to let light in at the back of the lens.
By the way, the WC-E68 is not as big as it looks in the picture. But it is heavy, being a substantial piece of glass.
Another possibility, but bigger to carry, is to go with the Fuji S6000fd. It's not small, but it has a 28mm lens and good low light performance, all for less than $300.

Check out the Kodak Easyshare V570. (Here's a review) I've even seen it for under $200 here and there although the list price is about $400, I believe.
The cool thing about it is that it actually has two different lenses - one for wide angle and one for zoom. It's won a bunch of design awards.

Select <28mm for the zoom wide field and then select any other features and it will give you the options available.
The widest I saw was the Nikon Coolpix 8400 at 24mm.

I played with that compare deal and found the Kodak V705 to have a 23mm wide angle. I found it at Newegg.com for $244 with a free 2GB card. Other than the wide angle bit, I know nothing else about the camera though. |
