Hi everyone!
I'm very excited that the open challenges are running with the expert rules, I have a picture to submit to one of them and I would like to take advantage of the extra rules. I have an idea of what should I do to the picture, but I don't know if it is legal neither how to do it.
Basically, I want to blur and darken the background and lighten and sharpen the subject. I also would like to clone a small part of the background (would it be legal to eliminate the lightened spot ont the upper right corner of the second picture from the bottom up in this tutorial?

I have found some tutorials:

layer masks 1
layer masks 2
intro to layers
dodging and burning
blurring a backround

The problem is that I'm no expert at all and I don't know what could be more useful for my purpose and I have no time to read them all and try their application to my picture because it's already Sunday evening here in Italy and from tomorrow on I will be busy with work and will have only little time for the final touches. I'm an absolute newbie at Photoshop but still I want to try to get that effect on my picture.
Any advice?

ok so I don't know about the rules since I don't post in challenges. However I have had enough Photoshop classes to suggest that you use Layer masks to do the editing on your photograph this will mean that you preserve a original copy of it in case you want to change things later. For most of the lighting stuff use the adjustment layers to do this. but first get a idea of what is legal to use and what is not.

I am not an expert in processing, especially expert editing!! However, I believe anything goes...pretty much.

Don't quote me if I am wrong. Quote me if I am right tho:))

Expert rules mean that pretty much anything goes, as long as your source image(s) were all taken by you within the timeframe (and no text added, etc). The rules pretty much tell you everything you can't do, so by implication everything else is ok.

Thank you very much, now I have only to figure out how to do it... I guess I will be playing with it until late!

So under 'Expert Editing' are you allowed to add/remove major elements to your picture, with the proviso that they were taken in the appropriate time window ?

So if you wanted to change your whole sky, shape of landscape whatever, would that be ok ? assuming the above proviso ?

As long as you have a picture of a sky or major element that you took during the challenge.
