Because I feel totally clueless. For the Contre-Jour challenge I entered this:
I thought it was, at the very least, pleasant and challenge-meeting, but maybe I wasn't directly into the sun enough? I can see the light beams going across the picture, and I was quite pleased because I couldn't see through the viewfinder taking it (too much light). Here's the vertical take and I think you can see that the sun is just out of frame, but I thought there'd be too many blown highlights?
Also, I was leaning more towards one of these two bee pictures, but my friends thought they sucked. What do you think? Here and here.
Thanks for you thoughts!

I think your first bee picture would have scored a little higher than your entry. Your entry just doesn't have anything terribly interesting in it. I think the second bee photo doesn't show the bee well enough, and unless you told me I might not have seen it. |

Thanks, Aliqui, that's kinda what I was thinking. I guess the question I was really asking was if I completely didn't understand the concept of Contre-jour and if I would have been better off submitting a bee picture. I think the bee pictures are probably equally dull but maybe more blatantly contre-jour?
Really, I just want to make sure I got the technical part right... afterall, I DID get stranded on a mountain for these pics! ;) |

I won't be so bold to say I know what Contre-jour means in depth. I didn't enter that challenge so I didn't research it. All I know is what I've halfassed read in the forums, heh. From what I understand and what I've seen from the winning results, you didn't do too bad with the concept. I think the bee shots are probably more along the lines of what people were looking for.
I've noticed though that 9 out of 10 of the top 10 have the sun/moon in the shot. Voters tend to be very by the book and you can't really stray too far unless there's something really cool about the shot. A prime example is the comment left on the #4 finisher's photo which does not directly contain the light source:
"no direct light... follow the rules... cool pic though, just not for this contest..."
I think your idea was close, but might have been stretching it a bit for those folks that follow the rules to a T. |

Thanks again, aliqui! I could just give you a big hug! I got the EXACT same comment on my pic that you quoted from place 4, so it really is a perfect example of what you were saying. I'm going to go back through the entries again and study them a little more closely! But I'm certainly feeling less hopelessly clueless.
:D
