I'm curious to know how long it took people to build up their collection of current hardware (Cameras, lenses etc.)
I ask because I thought that after buying my D80 I would be happy. However, when I walk into a store I find myself going to the camera department and finding something new that I want. I still don't have a flash, but I want one. I'd love a macro lens, but I can't afford one. There are all kinds of things I wish I could buy NOW that I know I won't be able to. Just wondering how long it took everyone else.
My newest toy is the Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control
It was cheap, and now I can take some self-portraits without trying to run into place. |

It has taken me a year. I bought my D70s a year ago this last weekend. Since then I have bought (and I can't even think about how much I spent!)
1. 50 mm 1.4
2. 105 mm Macro lens
3. 70-300 mm
4. 18-200 mm VR
5. 12-24 mm Tokina
6. 2 tripods (one sturdy, one for travelling)
7. ML-L3 wireless remote.
Now I'm feeling very guilty as that's a lot of presents to myself! It gets a bit addictive. The sentence in bold below sums it up I think!!

I'm with Erick... it never ends. The more you learn, the more you'll need things to help you get what you want. Once you feel like you've gotten a nice kit together you'll start on software, accessories, props, and so on, and so on.

Edit: Bolded Items I still have...not included are the many different camear bags. Now I have just a Trekker Pro.
Canon Powershot S50 (Father-in-law now has)
Canon Powershot Pro1
x1.5 Canon Telephoto Adapter (takes it to 320mm)
dSLR went something like this over two years.
The morale of the story is when you get your first dSLR do not run out and buy budget glass, shoot with what you got and save for better stuff. I was not happy with the results up until I got the 70-200mm 4L (except for the fantastic plastic 50mm).
Canon 20D w/Kit Lens
Quantaray 70-300mm, returned after 1.5 days for Canon 55-200mm
Canon 50mm 1.8 MKII
Bought Tamrom 28-300mm ebayed Kit lens and Canon 55-200mm
Bought Canon 70-200mm 4L
Tamron SP 17-35mm 2.8-4 ebayed Tammy 28-300mm
Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 DG x1.4 TC
Tamron SP 28-75mm 2.8
Vivitar 100mm Macro 3.6-4.5(hey I only paid $60usd for it)
Tamron SP 11-18mm

It's called NAS. Nikon Acquisition Syndrome.
I assume for Cannonites its CAS, and so on..
It's an incurable disease. Dr. Achoo can show you how to manage it as a allergy. ;)

I want a new body, I want the 85 f/1.8 (or the 85 f/1.4), I want a 300mm f/4 and a 1.4x TC, I want studio lights & backgrounds & reflectors, I want a new computer (mac), I want Photoshop CS3.....
But I think I'll spent some time on how to actually make good use of the equipment I already have first. :)

| My advice would be to make a list in order of importance, keeping it realistic. Resist the urge to buy something cheap(er) that you don't really need just because you have enough in your wallet to pay for it, and the item you really need is just out of your budget. Save save save. The little things add up quickly, and before you know it you've spent enough on crap you hardly use that would've easily paid for, say, that flash you could really use. |

| Got my D70s w/ 18-70mm at Christmas 2005, came with 2GB Lexar Pro CF card, Nikon camera/gadget bag. Got an SB-600 flash at the same time. Before the New Years I had the Nikkor 70-300mm ED zoom. Before the end of that January I had the 50mm f/1.8 with flex hood, and a reversing ring. Before the end of February I had the 35mm f/2, and the wireless remote. Got a top-end circ polarizer, ND filters, and several others like star, warming, softener, etc. during the same time frame. In other words, I went crazy up front but I've been happily using everything since (except I'm not using the filters near as much as I thought I would and haven't actually used the reversing ring yet). |
