It looks like I am late to this tread but here is my two cents.

First, I do think the Free Study is currently way to big and somehow needs cut down. I admit I only had the time and energy to vote on about 25%. I hate doing that because I always seem to miss the really cool shots when I don't vote on them all.

How about this? It seems that a large part of the Free Study is Portrait work. Why not have 2 monthly member challenges, one that is a normal Free Study (may or may not allow portraits) and another that is portraits only. Members can only enter one per month.

Landscapes are also a big part.... why not landscapes too?

Past that how about 1 that can be stuido only and one that can be not studio.....

it can go on forever!

This is the impression I am getting with this thread. However, if there truly is a problem with too many entries then just make the FS a bi-weekly thing. If you argue that people will then just enter both then make it like the member/open challenges where you can only enter one. In other words you can only enter one FS in a 4 week span. This would also keep the front page from getting more cluttered.

When the frequency of Free Studies increased from randomly to monthly, the # of entries did not decrease.

With regard to limiting the frequency of the submissions - now that is just freaking brilliant. Well done.

or just keep it like it is but you can only enter one every two months. Shouldn't be hard to implement.

Please.. this is an open discussion and dialogue on an issue that many seem to feel is valid enough. Sarcasm and/or hostility certainly isn't going to help anyone.

Honest and constructive feedback is wonderful though.

Yanko, the idea about staggering the Free Study split is a good one. I haven't seen that brought up yet, and I like the sound of it, as it *would* help the front page clutter.

The initial idea was always to have whatever split was considered to be one in which you could only choose *one* to enter. So there's no worries about people entering all/both/whatever.

WAAAAH WAAAAH CRY CRY WAAAAAH Please dont fix it its not broken.

J/K. Actually what i do want to say is i hated writing poems for english class and always did horribly.

Why? Because i was forced to write about a topic instead of being inspired to. When i write for myself i do good, not award winning but better then when someone tells me to write it.

Free Studies allow me to shoot what i want and do better at it even though i wont score well i still shoot better images then something i have to rush to come up with ideas for.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, but are you suggesting maybe splitting the free study up by time period? But maybe vote at the same time? So....

April free study weeks 1 and 2 (by date taken)
April free study weeks 3 and 4 (by date taken)

Having both challenges open all month so you could submit to either (but not both) on the last day? I don't know how the exif data looks for the free study, but it always seems to have substantial entries early on.

Wow - I read through the whole thread - lots of interesting ideas and opinions! The only thing I can add is to answer Rainmotorsports' question: YES, you can vote in an election if you are one of the candidates. ...so, who would you vote for?

As for the FS issue - I'm taking a "wait and see and eat popcorn" attitude. Carry on. Lord knows I do.

No. You would need to stagger the voting periods at least a week to avoid cluttering the front page with lots of challenge results. Splitting the FS into two or even four as Artyste suggest could work under a staggered format in both the submission phase and voting phase but if you are going to do only one it needs to be the voting phase.
